About English Studies Lesson Notes
English Studies is the subject in which pupils learn to listen, speak, read and write in English. In Nigerian schools it runs from the early primary classes through junior and senior secondary. These notes cover Basic 1 to SS3.
Early notes deal with phonics, new words, sight words and simple sentences. Later notes cover speech work and vowel and consonant sounds, comprehension, tenses, parts of speech, letter writing, essays, summary, idioms and word study.
What students learn
By the end of SS3, a student who has worked through these notes should be able to:
- Pronounce vowel sounds, consonant sounds and diphthongs correctly, and tell similar sounds apart
- Use intonation and stress appropriately in speech
- Identify and use the parts of speech, tenses, active and passive voice and modal auxiliary verbs
- Recognise noun, adjectival and adverbial clauses and build compound and complex sentences
- Write formal, semi formal and informal letters in the correct format
- Write descriptive, argumentative and persuasive essays, and speeches, with a clear introduction, body and conclusion
- Read a passage to find main ideas, and write a summary of it
- Use synonyms, antonyms, idioms, phrasal verbs and collocations to widen vocabulary
