About Hausa Lesson Notes
Hausa is a major language of northern Nigeria, and these notes teach it as a school subject from Basic 1 to Basic 6. Pupils begin with letters, simple reading, greetings and counting. They then move on to writing, word building and the study of nouns (sunaye) and verbs (aikatau).
The notes also cover songs, riddles, proverbs, folktales and short plays. Pupils learn about Hausa food, family life, clothing, occupations, naming and marriage customs, the days of the week and the months of the year. In the upper classes they write letters and study communication and transport.
What students learn
By the end of Basic 6, a student who has worked through these notes should be able to:
- Read and write Hausa letters, vowels and consonants, and build them into words and sentences
- Count in Hausa from one up to one thousand
- Use everyday greetings correctly
- Name people, places, animals, foods and household items in Hausa
- Identify nouns and verbs and use them in simple sentences
- Write a letter in Hausa
- Recite songs, riddles and proverbs, and retell folktales
- Describe Hausa family life, foods, clothing, occupations and customs such as naming and marriage
