Introduction

Consonant sounds are letters that are not vowels (a, e, i, o, u). Today we learn about /b/ and /d/ sounds.

Content Development

The /b/ Sound:

  • Made by pressing both lips together then releasing
  • Examples: bed, ball, book, baby, big, bus, bat, box

The /d/ Sound:

  • Made by touching tongue to the roof of mouth then releasing
  • Examples: dog, doll, door, duck, dad, day, dot, dig

Sound Practice:

  1. Pure Sound Practice:
    1. /b/ – /b/ – /b/ (like a bouncing ball)
    2. /d/ – /d/ – /d/ (like a drum beat)
  2. Word Beginning Sounds:
    1. /b/: bed, ball, book, baby
    2. /d/: dog, doll, door, duck
  3. Sound Discrimination:
    1. Listen and say if you hear /b/ or /d/:
    2. bag (/b/), dig (/d/), bed (/b/), door (/d/)

Matching Activity: Match these sounds to pictures:

  • Picture of a ball → /b/
  • Picture of a dog → /d/
  • Picture of a book → /b/
  • Picture of a doll → /d/

Word Building:

  • /b/ + ed = bed
  • /d/ + og = dog
  • /b/ + all = ball
  • /d/ + oor = door

Exercise 3: Phonics (/b/ and /d/ sounds)

Circle the correct sound:

  1. dog: /b/ or /d/
  2. ball: /b/ or /d/
  3. bed: /b/ or /d/
  4. doll: /b/ or /d/

Fill in the missing letter:

  1. _all (b/d)
  2. _og (b/d)
  3. _ed (b/d)
  4. _ook (b/d)
