About Financial Accounting Lesson Notes
Financial Accounting is the study of recording business transactions and reporting them in clear financial statements. In Nigerian schools it is taught in the senior secondary classes, and these notes cover SS1 to SS3.
The notes begin with the accounting equation, double entry, the ledger and the cash book. They move on to the trial balance, final accounts of a sole trader and depreciation. Later topics include suspense accounts, partnership and company accounts, non profit organisations, the Nigerian financial system, public sector accounting, branch, consignment and hire purchase accounts.
What students learn
By the end of SS3, a student who has worked through these notes should be able to:
- Explain the accounting equation and apply the double entry principle in the ledger and cash books
- Prepare a trial balance, the final accounts of a sole trader and a balance sheet
- Calculate depreciation of fixed assets using the common methods
- Prepare a bank reconciliation statement and correct errors using a suspense account
- Prepare accounts for partnerships, companies and non profit organisations
- Interpret financial statements using simple ratios
- Describe the Nigerian financial system, the capital market and the role of the Nigerian Stock Exchange
- Prepare branch, joint venture, consignment, hire purchase and contract accounts
