GRAMMAR: IRREGULAR VERBS

Irregular verbs are verbs that don’t take on the regular -d, -ed, or -ied spelling patterns of the past simple (V2) or past participle (V3). Many of the irregular V2 and V3 forms are the same, such as: cut cut, had had, let let, hurt hurt, fed- fed, and sold-sold. Irregular verbs are also often described as strong verbs. Here are nine that are used more often than the rest. 

These nine irregular verb examples also happen to be among the most commonly used words in the English language. They are:

1. Go
2. Get
3. Say
4. See
5. Think
6. Make

EXAMPLES SHOWING HOW IRREGULAR VERBS ARE USED IN SENTENCES. 

1. Go get your brother. 
2. It’s time to eat dinner. 

In these examples, all three irregular verbs (go, get, and eat) are in base form.

3. I want to build a sand castle like the one we built last year. 

In this example, the irregular verb build is in base form. The irregular verb built in the past simple form of “build”.

VOCABULARY DEVELOPMENT: WORDS ASSOCIATED WITH ANIMAL HUSBANDRY

Animal husbandry is the branch of agriculture that is concerned with raising animals such as goats, sheep, cattle, (livestock), pigs, (piggery), rabbits (rabbitry) and chicken (poultry).

READ THE FOLLOWING PASSAGE AND NOTE THE WORDS AND EXPRESSIONS IN BOLD.

In the Northern part of Nigeria, it is quite common to see herds of cattle. The herdsman moves from place to place in search of pasture. The modern method of animal husbandry is to put the cowherds in an enclosure known as a pen. In this cattle ranch, the farmer provides fodder for the cattle and ensures that they are cared for

The veterinary doctor comes in regularly to ensure that there are no infections. Diseases like rinderpest can wipe out a whole herd. Some cattle are kept only for milk production. The dairy farmer ensures that the cattle are milked at regular intervals. Some of the milk is sold as fresh milk while some are pasteurized. We also get tinned milk, powdered milk, butter, and cheese from milk. Your favourite drink, yoghurt, is also made from milk.

Other words associated with animal husbandry: pen cages, milking time, chicken disease, farm hand, rooster, day-old chicks, broiler, pasture, feed mill, animal feed, farm worker, farm director, piglets, buck, cage, rudders.
