About Commerce Lesson Notes

Commerce is the study of how goods and services move from producers to consumers, and of the activities that support that movement. It is taught as a subject in Nigerian senior secondary schools, and these notes cover SS1 to SS3.

The notes begin with occupation, production and trade, including retail, wholesale and foreign trade. They go on to money, credit, insurance, transportation, warehousing and the stock exchange. The SS3 notes cover business law, contracts, agency, hire purchase, marketing, advertising, privatisation and economic groupings in West Africa such as ECOWAS.

What students learn

By the end of SS3, a student who has worked through these notes should be able to:

  • Explain the meaning of commerce, occupation and production
  • Compare small and large scale retailers and describe the role of wholesale trade
  • Describe the documents used in foreign trade and the work of the Customs and Excise Authority, the NPA and the NAA
  • Distinguish sole proprietorship from partnership
  • Outline the functions of money, credit, insurance, warehousing and transportation
  • Describe how the Stock Exchange and the Second Tier Securities Market work
  • Identify the main types of contract and explain the law of agency, the sale of goods and hire purchase
  • State the aims of ECOWAS and other West African economic groupings
