Topic: Word Formation: Synonyms

What are Synonyms? Synonyms are words that have the same or similar meanings.

Common Synonym Pairs:

Size:

  • big = large, huge, enormous
  • small = tiny, little, mini

Appearance:

  • beautiful = pretty, lovely, attractive
  • ugly = horrible, awful, hideous

Feelings:

  • happy = joyful, cheerful, glad
  • sad = unhappy, miserable, upset

Movement:

  • fast = quick, speedy, rapid
  • slow = sluggish, gradual, leisurely

Part 1: Match the synonyms:

Part 2: Replace the underlined words with synonyms:
