Content

What are Rhyming Words?

Words that end with the same sound: cat, hat, bat, rat

Common Rhyming Families

-at family: cat, hat, bat, mat, sat -ay family: play, day, way, say, may -ight family: night, light, bright, sight

Sample Rhyming Poem

The cat sat on the mat,

And wore a funny hat.

The sun shines bright,

Throughout the night.

 

Identifying Rhymes

Do these words rhyme?

  • cat/hat = YES
  • dog/tree = NO
  • run/sun = YES
  • book/car = NO

Exercises

  1. Circle rhyming words in a poem
  2. Complete rhyming poems with missing words
  3. Write 2 lines that rhyme

Exercise 4: Rhyming

  1. Circle words that rhyme with “play”: day, book, way, tree, say
  2. Complete the poem: The sun shines _______, All through the night.
