Topic: Descriptive Essays & Nominalization of Adjectives

SPOKEN ENGLISH: DESCRIPTIVE ESSAYS

A descriptive essay is an essay in which students are expected to give a vivid description of, for example, an object, a person, an animal, a process, etc.

FEATURES OF A DESCRIPTIVE ESSAY

  1. It must have a title
  2. It must be written in good paragraphs
  3. It must be written in simple present forms of the verbs used.
  4. The use of good figures of speech is allowed.
  5. The essay should be logical and clear enough to give a mental picture of what is being described to the reader

ASSIGNMENT 

Write a descriptive essay on the topic: The Petrol State in times of fuel scarcity. 

GRAMMAR: NOMINALIZATION OF ADJECTIVES 

Nominalization is the process of converting or turning adjectives or verbs into nouns with the use of suffixes. More so, nominalization could be seen as a process of forming a noun from a verb or adjective however, the parts of speech that can be nominalized are verbs, and adjectives into nouns all other parts of speech cannot be nominalized eg:

Submissive  Submission  -ion
Immoral Immorality  -lity
Achieve  Achievement  -ment
Appraise  Appraisal  -sal

Acknowledge  Acknowledgement  -ment
Attractive  Attraction -ion
Appoint Appointment  -ment
Amuse  Amusement  -ment
Neutral  Neutralism -lism
