About Geography Lesson Notes
Geography is the study of the Earth, its physical features, its climates and the ways people use and change the land. In Nigerian senior secondary schools it is taught from SS1 to SS3, and these notes follow that sequence.
SS1 begins with the Earth’s rotation and revolution, latitude and longitude, rocks and landforms, then moves to Nigeria’s relief, climate, population, agriculture and transport. SS2 covers rivers, wind, ice and waves, climate, soil, settlement, world population and Africa. SS3 adds volcanicity, weathering, world trade, tourism, remote sensing, GIS, surveying and map reading.
What students learn
By the end of SS3, a student who has worked through these notes should be able to:
- Explain the Earth’s rotation and revolution and use latitude and longitude to locate places
- Describe the main rock types, landforms and structure of the Earth
- Describe the relief, drainage, climate, vegetation and resources of Nigeria
- Compare the work of running water, wind, glaciers and waves in shaping the land
- Classify climate and vegetation types and explain the causes of climatic change
- Outline the causes and effects of volcanoes, earthquakes, weathering and mass movements
- Discuss farming, mining, trade and tourism in Nigeria, West Africa and Africa
- Read maps, measure distance, direction and bearing, and describe how GIS and remote sensing are applied

How we prepare our lesson notes
Each note covers one topic for one class and one term, and the notes are arranged in teaching order. Every note opens with behavioural objectives, then presents the lesson content in short sections. It closes with evaluation questions and an assignment drawn from the same note.
Before publication, notes are edited for accuracy, plain language and the right level for the class. Teachers can use them as they stand or adapt them to their own scheme of work and their pupils’ needs.
Every note is free to read online. A PDF or Word copy of one subject costs ₦1,000 for one term, or ₦2,000 for all three terms. If you find a mistake, tell us and we will correct it.
