About Social Studies Lesson Notes

Social Studies looks at how people live together and care for their surroundings. In Nigerian schools it is taught from the primary classes through junior secondary. These notes run from Basic 1 to JSS3.

Early notes deal with the family, marriage, culture, food, water and safety at home and on the road. Middle classes add citizenship, government, saving, employment, resources, communication and housing. Upper classes cover socialization, drug abuse and trafficking, cultism, crime, human trafficking, conflict resolution and peaceful living.

What students learn

By the end of JSS3, a student who has worked through these notes should be able to:

  • Describe the family, types of marriage and the roles of extended family members
  • Explain the meaning of culture and how Nigerian cultures are similar and different
  • Outline the levels and functions of government and the idea of citizenship
  • Identify the causes and effects of road accidents and give simple first aid
  • Explain the dangers of drug abuse and drug trafficking and ways to prevent them
  • State the causes and consequences of cultism and common crimes
  • Describe human trafficking and harmful traditional practices and how to prevent them
  • Suggest ways of managing and resolving social conflicts to promote peaceful living
