About Horticulture and Crop Production Lesson Notes

Horticulture and Crop Production is the study of how garden and field crops are grown, protected, harvested and sold. On this site it covers SS1 to SS3, with notes arranged term by term.

SS1 notes deal with soil, tools, nursery practices, propagation, irrigation, weed and pest control, and land preparation. SS2 moves to crop improvement, greenhouse technology, crop rotation, intercropping, storage, extension services and groups of crops such as cereals, tubers and vegetables. SS3 covers hydroponics, precision agriculture, farm management, agricultural finance and project work, with a final term of revision and exam preparation.

What students learn

By the end of SS3, a student who has worked through these notes should be able to:

  • Describe the branches of horticulture and classify crops, including by lifecycle.
  • Prepare land, then plant and maintain crops using suitable tools, nursery practices and propagation methods.
  • Apply fertilizer and manure, and control weeds, pests and diseases.
  • Explain crop rotation, mixed cropping and intercropping, and how crop yield is measured.
  • Compare irrigation systems and growing methods such as greenhouses, hydroponics, aeroponics and aquaponics.
  • Describe the harvesting, storage and marketing of horticultural products.
  • Outline how farm records, farm management and agricultural finance support a farm business.
  • Plan, carry out and report on a crop project, and answer exam style questions on the course.
