Topic: Structure: Main Clause Modal ‘If’

What are Conditional Sentences with ‘If’?

These sentences show cause and effect. They have two parts: the ‘if’ clause (condition) and the main clause (result).

Structure:

If + present tense, + will/shall + base verb

Examples:

  • If I am lazy, my mother will be angry.
  • If you study hard, you will pass the exam.
  • If it rains, we will stay indoors.
  • If she comes early, we will start the meeting.

Modal Verbs in Main Clause:

  • will (certainty): If you work hard, you will succeed.
  • can (ability): If you practice, you can improve.
  • may (possibility): If we hurry, we may catch the bus.
  • should (advice): If you feel sick, you should see a doctor.
  • must (necessity): If it rains, we must take umbrellas.

Fill in the correct modal verb:

  1. If I finish my homework early, I _______ watch television.

  3. If we leave now, we _______ arrive on time.
  4. If the weather is good, we _______ go for a picnic.
