Topic: Phonemic Awareness

Learning Objectives: By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:

  1. Learn sounds through songs
  2. Identify sounds in songs
  3. Repeat sounds in words they hear
  4. Analyse sounds given to them

DETAILED LESSON CONTENT

PHONICS SONGS

Song 1: Animal Sounds “The cat says /m/ /m/ /m/ (meow sound)

 The dog says /w/ /w/ /w/ (woof sound)
The cow says /m/ /m/ /m/ (moo sound) These are the sounds animals make!”

Song 2: Beginning Sounds “B is for ball, /b/ /b/ /b/ C is for cat, /c/ /c/ /c/ D is for dog, /d/ /d/ /d/ Let’s sing the sounds we know!”

Song 3: Vowel Sounds “A says /a/ in apple and ant E says /e/ in egg and elephant
I says /i/ in igloo and ink These are vowel sounds, let’s think!”

SOUND IDENTIFICATION ACTIVITIES

Activity 1: Sound Hunt Teacher sings a song. Pupils listen for specific sounds:

  • Clap when you hear the /a/ sound
  • Stand up when you hear the /b/ sound
  • Sit down when you hear the /c/ sound

Activity 2: Echo Sounds Teacher says: “I hear /c/ /a/ /t/” Pupils repeat: “/c/ /a/ /t/” Then say the whole word: “cat”

Word List for Echo Practice:

  1. /b/ /a/ /t/ = bat
  2. /c/ /a/ /r/ = car
  3. /d/ /o/ /g/ = dog
  4. /s/ /u/ /n/ = sun
  5. /r/ /e/ /d/ = red
  6. /b/ /i/ /g/ = big
  7. /h/ /o/ /t/ = hot
  8. /c/ /u/ /p/ = cup
  9. /p/ /e/ /n/ = pen
  10. /b/ /o/ /x/ = box

SOUND ANALYSIS

Breaking Words Apart: Teacher says a word, pupils identify each sound:

Example Words:

  • sit = /s/ /i/ /t/ (3 sounds)
  • cat = /c/ /a/ /t/ (3 sounds)
  • dog = /d/ /o/ /g/ (3 sounds)
  • run = /r/ /u/ /n/ (3 sounds)
  • top = /t/ /o/ /p/ (3 sounds)

Blending Sounds: Teacher says individual sounds, pupils blend to make words:

  • /f/ /a/ /n/ = fan
  • /p/ /e/ /t/ = pet
  • /h/ /u/ /g/ = hug
  • /m/ /a/ /p/ = map
  • /l/ /i/ /d/ = lid
