Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are used to provide spatial data for decisions in many fields, including city planning, resource management, health, disaster response, transport, farming, telecommunications and education. In Nigeria, poor infrastructure, limited data, few skilled workers, high costs, unclear policies and weak maintenance limit their use.

What are the applications of GIS?

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have diverse applications across various fields:

  1. GIS helps in city planning, land-use mapping and infrastructure development by providing spatial data for informed decision-making.
  2. GIS aids in monitoring and managing natural resources, tracking environmental changes and planning conservation efforts.
  3. GIS is used for mapping disease patterns, analysing healthcare accessibility and optimising the location of healthcare facilities.
  4. GIS supports disaster response and preparedness by mapping vulnerable areas, assessing risks and coordinating emergency services.
  5. GIS is used in route optimisation, traffic management and logistics planning, improving efficiency in transportation systems.
  6. Farmers use GIS for precision farming, optimising crop yields and managing resources like water and fertilisers based on spatial data.
  7. GIS is employed in forestry, water resource management and mining to monitor and manage natural resources sustainably.
  8. GIS assists in disease surveillance, epidemiology and public health planning by mapping the spread of diseases and identifying high-risk areas.
  9. GIS aids in planning and optimising the placement of telecommunication infrastructure such as cell towers, improving network coverage and efficiency.
  10. GIS is used in educational settings for teaching geography and spatial analysis, and for providing hands-on experience with real-world data.

What problems limit GIS implementation in Nigeria?

Several challenges impede the smooth implementation of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in Nigeria:

  1. Inadequate technological infrastructure. Unreliable power supply and internet connectivity make it hard for GIS systems to function effectively.
  2. Limited access to accurate and up-to-date spatial data. Inconsistent data quality and insufficient coverage can reduce the reliability of GIS applications.
  3. Shortage of skilled GIS professionals. Adequate training and education programmes are needed to build a workforce proficient in GIS technology and its applications.
  4. High cost. Acquiring GIS software and hardware, and conducting the necessary training, can be costly. Many organisations in Nigeria, especially smaller ones, may find it hard to invest in GIS technology.
  5. Lack of clear policies and regulations. The absence of rules governing GIS data sharing, access and usage can impede widespread adoption. A strong regulatory framework is needed.
  6. Poor maintenance. Regular maintenance is essential for the longevity and best performance of GIS systems. However, a lack of funding and technical expertise can prevent proper maintenance.

Evaluation

  1. Mention five applications of GIS across various fields.
  2. Identify five factors militating against GIS implementation in Nigeria.

Classwork: As in the evaluation.

Assignment

  1. Explain how GIS is used in disaster response and in farming.
  2. Describe two problems that limit GIS implementation in Nigeria.

Closing: The teacher commends the students.
