Concept Of Social Studies JSS3 Social Studies Lesson Note

This is a concept/topic that explains social problems, facts about man, and how he relates to his surroundings. Social studies concept/ content is made up of integrated subjects such as history, geography, economics, government, psychology, sociology, anthropology, political science, and religion.

The social studies content includes the following:

FACTS: it is knowledge or information strictly based on real occurrences examples:

1. There are 36 states in Nigeria.
2. The Edo people are indigent in the southern part of Nigeria.
3. A Yoruba male prostrates to greet elders.
4. The Edo people of the southern part of Nigeria are very hospitable.

CONCEPT: it is a general idea or description about something, it involves the definition or meaning of a subject to have a clear understanding of it. Examples include:

1. The mere mention of conflict, in our minds the image is of people arguing, disagreement, or fighting with one another.

GENERALIZATION: this is a statement or conclusion about a group of people. Examples

1. The Okene people of Kogi state are very violent.
2. Marriage between a man and a woman in Nigeria is legal.

SKILL: it is the ability to do certain things very well. It may be acquired or developed through training or experience; it is what makes you more outstanding and unique than others.

VALUE: it is the usefulness or importance of something. Example: a person with good values shuns corruption, stealing, lying, or anything evil.

ATTITUDE: it refers to our manner feeling, and approach towards issues. It influences our behavior and the way we do things.

GENERAL OBJECTIVES OF SOCIAL STUDIES 

Objectives are goals an individual or group aims at to get the very best of their performance. Some of the general objectives of social studies include the following:

1. Critical thinking:  Social studies teaches students about history and enables them to understand how society has evolved. It also helps students develop an ability to think critically about societal issues and learn how to address them based on their understanding of social values.
2. Social understanding: It allows students to develop an understanding of society and the human condition.
3. Integrating ideas: Social studies involves several subjects including history, geography, and economics. Students learn how to integrate ideas from different disciplines to come up with reasonable decisions so that they are better able to identify problems affecting society.

Other objectives of social studies include:

1. Social studies educate students on becoming patriotic and responsible citizens.
2. Social studies teaches us our roles and responsibilities in the environment we find ourselves.
3. It helps us develop critical thinking abilities.
4. Social studies prepares us to participate competently and productively as concerned citizens and teaches us to address societal and global concerns using literature technology and other identifiable community resources.

Generally, social studies educates students on citizenship, providing them with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes that will help them become responsible citizens.
