NEED FOR SAFETY

The need for safety in Nigeria today is imperative because of the fact of natural, political, economic, and technological happenings taking place within the entity called Nigeria. We are besieged by flooding, bomb blasts from Boko Haram, militancy, political corruption, unemployment, criminal acts here and there, and the coronavirus pandemic which is currently disrupting the national economy and destroying lots of lives today. Others include religious bigotry within various religious camps in Nigeria, technological advancement, drugs and food in our hospitals and homes, etc.  There is a need to know how these elements touch our lives and how best we can manage them to reduce the harmful effects of wrong usage. Safety means the state of being safe and protected from danger or harm. Safety is also a precautionary measure against accidents. We are in danger of accidents at home, school, or workplace.  Accidents are those unexpected events that can occur anytime, anywhere without warning. We should ensure our homes, schools, and workplaces are safe from accidents.

TYPES OF ACCIDENT 

They are as follows: 

1. Home accidents 
2. School accidents 
3. Road accidents 

Causes of accidents at home are; 

Slippery floor Banana peels Knife-cut Razor-cut etc. 

Causes of accidents at school are; 

Fighting Playing on rough ground Throwing stones Using chairs, and desks to defend yourself 

Need for the safety of the student 

1. To have a healthy living 
2. To save lives 
3. To protect our properties etc. 

Safety measures in the home 

1. Parents should make family responsibilities known to all members 
2. There should be equal love for every member 
3. Children should be given the right type of education, formal and informal 4. Adult jokes should be shielded from the children to avoid abuse of youth. 5. Sour food should not be eaten in the home. 
4. Avoid taking drugs not prescribed by a medical doctor to avoid unsafe medication and drug abuse. 
5. Avoid pouring water on the floor 
6. Scrub and pour water on the floor thoroughly 
7. Avoid throwing banana peels on the floor carelessly 
8. Sharp objects like razors, pins, knives, etc. should be used carefully 
9. Poisonous substances such as fuel, gas kerosene, and insecticides should be kept away from children’s reach. 
10. The use of technological equipment like electric boilers, heaters, kettles, iron cookers, etc., and others like DVDs, VCDs, radios, computers, internet, handset, etc. by children should be thoroughly explained the usage and instructions on how to be used. 

Safety measures at school 

1. The school should have adequate classrooms, laboratories, a library, pitches for games, and enough space for further expansion. 
2. Fencing of the school to avoid students leaving at their will and stop unwanted visitors coming into the school. 
3. The student’s behavior should be regulated through rules and regulations. 
4. Dangerous things like broken bottles, blades, stones, and other sharp objects removed from the school environment. 
5. Avoid playing in the classroom especially where there are staircases. 
6. Provision of first aid kits. 
7. Reporting of academic behavior, and other positive and negative actions of the students to the parents or guardians quarterly or yearly. 
8. Proper drainage channels should be made and maintained in school. 
9. Check the disruptive influence of cyber crimes, cultism, pornography, etc. 
10. Faulty electric cables, switches, wall sockets, etc should be repaired promptly. 
11. Students should not play with these harmful elements: acid, fire, knives, bottles, etc, especially in the laboratories.

Safety Measures in the Workplace 

1. There should be an entrance gate and exit emergency gates. 
2. Provision of first aid kits in case of injury 
3. Safety measures on financial prudence. 
4. Safety precautions on the security of goods – putting of burglary proofs, close circuit cameras, security men, police dogs, etc. 
5. Making rules guiding human behavior  
6. Safety measures on the use of farm tools and other farm equipment. 
7. Preservation methods such as storage facilities like refrigerators, etc. 
8. Safety measures on insurance:  
9. The goods can be insured against fire, theft, natural disasters, etc. 
10. The workers also can be insured against factory hazards. 
11. There should be orientation and re-orientation for the workers in the workplace 
12. Workers are always asked to adhere strictly to the warning signals
