The Person of the Holy Spirit

Who is the Holy Spirit?

The Third Person of the Trinity:

• God exists as three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit
• The Holy Spirit is fully God, just like the Father and Jesus
• He is equal with the Father and Son in power and glory
• All three persons work together as one God

The Holy Spirit is a Real Person:

• He is not just a force or power
• He has thoughts, feelings, and will
• He can speak, teach, and guide
• He can be grieved when we sin

Bible verse: “But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth” (John 16:13)

What the Holy Spirit Does

He Lives Inside Believers:

• The Holy Spirit comes to live in our hearts when we believe in Jesus
• He makes our bodies His temple
• He stays with us forever
• He is always present to help us

Bible verse: “Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst?” (1 Corinthians 3:16)

He Teaches and Guides Us:

• The Holy Spirit helps us understand the Bible
• He shows us what is right and wrong
• He guides us in making good decisions
• He reminds us of Jesus’ teachings

He Helps Us Pray:

• Sometimes we don’t know what to pray for
• The Holy Spirit helps us pray the right way
• He prays for us when we can’t find words
• He connects our hearts to God

Bible verse: “In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us” (Romans 8:26)

He Gives Us Power:

• The Holy Spirit gives us strength to do good
• He helps us resist temptation and sin
• He gives us courage to tell others about Jesus
• He empowers us to live like Jesus

He Produces Good Fruit in Our Lives:

• Love, joy, peace
• Patience, kindness, goodness
• Faithfulness, gentleness, self-control
• These qualities grow in us as we follow the Spirit

Bible verse: “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control” (Galatians 5:22-23)

Names and Symbols for the Holy Spirit

Names:

• Helper – He assists us in our Christian life
• Comforter – He comforts us when we are sad
• Counselor – He gives us wise advice
• Spirit of Truth – He teaches us God’s truth

Symbols:

• Dove – Shows His gentle, peaceful nature
• Fire – Shows His power to purify and cleanse
• Wind – Shows His invisible but powerful presence
• Water – Shows how He refreshes and gives life

2. The Promise of the Holy Spirit

Jesus’ Promise to His Disciples

Before Jesus Left:

• Jesus knew His disciples would be sad when He went to heaven
• He promised to send someone to help them
• This helper would be even better than having Jesus physically present
• The Holy Spirit would stay with them forever

Bible verse: “But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you” (John 16:7)

What Jesus Promised the Holy Spirit Would Do:

Teach Them Everything:

• The Holy Spirit would remind them of all Jesus taught
• He would help them understand difficult things
• He would guide them into all truth
• He would show them things to come

Bible verse: “But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you” (John 14:26)

Give Them Power:

• Power to be witnesses for Jesus
• Courage to speak about Jesus even when it was dangerous
• Strength to do miracles and heal people
• Ability to spread the Gospel to all nations

Bible verse: “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:8)

Comfort and Help Them:

• The Holy Spirit would be their helper in times of trouble
• He would comfort them when they were sad or afraid
• He would give them peace in their hearts
• He would never leave them alone

The Promise is for All Believers

Not Just for the Disciples:

• The promise of the Holy Spirit is for all who believe in Jesus
• Every Christian receives the Holy Spirit
• He comes to live in us when we accept Jesus as Savior
• This gift is available to people of all ages, including children

Bible verse: “Peter replied, ‘Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call'” (Acts 2:38-39)

What This Means for Us Today:

• We can have the same Holy Spirit that the disciples had
• He will teach, guide, and help us just like He did them
• We can receive power to live for Jesus
• We are never alone because the Holy Spirit is with us

Old Testament Promises

God’s Promise Through the Prophets:

• God promised to pour out His Spirit on all people
• He said His Spirit would come upon both young and old
• God promised to put His Spirit inside believers
• This was God’s plan from long ago

Bible verse: “And afterward, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions” (Joel 2:28)

The Coming of the Holy Spirit

The Day of Pentecost (Acts 2:1-31)

When It Happened:

• Fifty days after Jesus rose from the dead
• Ten days after Jesus went back to heaven
• The disciples were gathered together in Jerusalem
• They were praying and waiting as Jesus had told them

The Setting:

• All the disciples were in one place together
• They were continuing in prayer and fellowship
• They were obediently waiting for the promise
• Jews from many countries were in Jerusalem for the festival

How the Holy Spirit Came

The Sound of Wind:

• Suddenly there was a sound like a mighty rushing wind
• It filled the whole house where they were sitting
• Everyone could hear this powerful sound
• It showed the Holy Spirit’s power and presence

Bible verse: “Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting” (Acts 2:2)

Tongues of Fire:

• They saw what looked like tongues of fire
• These tongues divided and sat on each person
• This showed the Holy Spirit coming upon each believer
• Fire represents God’s holy presence and power

Bible verse: “They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them” (Acts 2:3)

Speaking in Different Languages:

• All the disciples were filled with the Holy Spirit
• They began to speak in languages they had never learned
• People from different countries could understand them
• This was a miracle that amazed everyone

Bible verse: “All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them” (Acts 2:4)

The Results of the Holy Spirit’s Coming

The Crowd’s Reaction:

• People from many nations heard the disciples speaking
• Each person heard them in their own language
• They were amazed and confused
• Some thought the disciples were drunk

Peter’s Bold Preaching:

• Peter stood up and preached powerfully
• He explained what was happening
• He told them about Jesus’ death and resurrection
• He urged them to repent and believe

Many People Believed:

• About 3,000 people became Christians that day
• They were baptized and joined the church
• The church began to grow rapidly
• The Gospel started spreading to all nations

Bible verse: “Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day” (Acts 2:41)

Changes in the Disciples

From Fear to Courage:

• Before: The disciples were hiding in fear
• After: They boldly preached about Jesus
• They were not afraid of persecution
• They were willing to die for their faith

From Confusion to Understanding:

• Before: They often didn’t understand Jesus’ teachings
• After: The Holy Spirit helped them understand everything
• They could explain the scriptures clearly
• They knew what God wanted them to do

From Weakness to Power:

• Before: They felt weak and helpless
• After: They had supernatural power
• They performed miracles and healed people
• They had strength to face any challenge

From Sadness to Joy:

• Before: They were sad because Jesus left them
• After: They were filled with joy and excitement
• They praised God continually
• They were eager to tell others about Jesus

The Continuing Work

The Church Grows:

• The Holy Spirit continued to work through believers
• More and more people became Christians
• Churches were planted in many cities
• The Gospel spread throughout the world

The Spirit Today:

• The same Holy Spirit is still active today
• He comes to live in everyone who believes in Jesus
• He gives the same power, guidance, and comfort
• He continues to build God’s church around the world

Bible verse: “Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved” (Acts 2:46-47)
