Learning Objectives

By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:

  1. Give the definition of obedience and faith
  2. Explain how Abraham demonstrated his faith and obedience
  3. Enumerate the things promised to Abraham
  4. Discuss the rewards of obedience

Introduction

Today we will learn about Abraham, a man who showed great faith and obedience to God. Abraham is called the father of faith because he trusted God completely.

Lesson Content

Important Definitions:

Obedience:

  • Doing what you are told to do
  • Following rules and commands
  • Listening to authority and acting on it
  • Choosing to do right even when it’s hard

Faith:

  • Believing in something you cannot see
  • Trusting God even when you don’t understand
  • Being sure that God will keep His promises
  • Acting on what you believe God has said

Who Was Abraham? (Genesis 12:1)

  • His name was first Abram, later changed to Abraham
  • He lived in a place called Ur with his family
  • He worshipped the one true God
  • God chose him for a special purpose

How Abraham Demonstrated Faith and Obedience:

  1. Leaving His Home Country (Genesis 12:1-4)
  • God told Abraham: “Leave your country, your people, and your father’s household”
  • God said: “Go to the land I will show you”
  • Abraham didn’t know where he was going
  • But Abraham obeyed and left his comfortable home
  • He trusted God to guide him
  1. Believing God’s Promise for a Son (Genesis 15:1-6, 21:1-7)
  • God promised Abraham he would have many children
  • Abraham and Sarah were very old and had no children
  • It seemed impossible, but Abraham believed God
  • Abraham waited many years for the promise
  • Finally, when Abraham was 100 years old, Isaac was born
  • Abraham’s faith was counted as righteousness
  1. Offering Isaac as a Sacrifice (Genesis 22:1-19)
  • God told Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac
  • Isaac was the son God had promised
  • Abraham was confused but still obeyed
  • Abraham took Isaac to Mount Moriah
  • Just as Abraham was about to sacrifice Isaac, God stopped him
  • God provided a ram to sacrifice instead
  • This showed Abraham’s complete obedience and trust

Things God Promised to Abraham:

  1. A Great Nation (Genesis 12:2)
  • “I will make you into a great nation”
  • Abraham would have many descendants
  • His family would become the nation of Israel
  1. Personal Blessings (Genesis 12:2)
  • “I will bless you”
  • “I will make your name great”
  • Abraham would be famous and respected
  1. To Be a Blessing (Genesis 12:2)
  • “You will be a blessing”
  • Abraham would help others
  • Through Abraham, God would bless the world
  1. Land to Live In (Genesis 12:1, 13:14-17)
  • God would give Abraham a special land
  • This land would belong to his descendants forever
  • This became the Promised Land (Israel)
  1. Descendants Like Stars (Genesis 15:5, 22:17)
  • Abraham’s descendants would be as many as the stars
  • Too many to count
  • They would be as numerous as sand on the seashore
  1. All Nations Blessed Through Him (Genesis 12:3, 22:18)
  • Through Abraham’s family, all nations would be blessed
  • This pointed to Jesus, who came from Abraham’s family
  • Jesus would save people from all nations

Rewards of Obedience:

Abraham’s Rewards:

  • God kept all His promises to Abraham
  • Abraham became the father of many nations
  • Abraham was called “God’s friend”
  • Abraham is remembered as a great man of faith
  • Jesus came through Abraham’s family line

General Rewards of Obedience:

  1. God’s Blessings – God blesses those who obey Him
  2. Peace and Joy – Obedient people have peace in their hearts
  3. God’s Protection – God takes care of those who follow Him
  4. Good Relationships – Obedience helps us get along with others
  5. God’s Favor – God is pleased with obedient people
  6. Success in Life – God helps obedient people succeed
  7. Eternal Rewards – God will reward obedience in heaven

Lessons for Us:

  • We should obey God even when we don’t understand
  • Faith means trusting God’s promises
  • God always keeps His word
  • Obedience brings blessings
  • God has a plan for our lives too

Memory Verse

“Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.” – Romans 4:3
