Learning Objectives

Introduction
Today we will learn about Abraham, a man who showed great faith and obedience to God. Abraham is called the father of faith because he trusted God completely.

Important Definitions:
Obedience:
- Doing what you are told to do
- Following rules and commands
- Listening to authority and acting on it
- Choosing to do right even when it’s hard
Faith:
- Believing in something you cannot see
- Trusting God even when you don’t understand
- Being sure that God will keep His promises
- Acting on what you believe God has said
Who Was Abraham? (Genesis 12:1)
- His name was first Abram, later changed to Abraham
- He lived in a place called Ur with his family
- He worshipped the one true God
- God chose him for a special purpose
How Abraham Demonstrated Faith and Obedience:
- Leaving His Home Country (Genesis 12:1-4)
- God told Abraham: “Leave your country, your people, and your father’s household”
- God said: “Go to the land I will show you”
- Abraham didn’t know where he was going
- But Abraham obeyed and left his comfortable home
- He trusted God to guide him
- Believing God’s Promise for a Son (Genesis 15:1-6, 21:1-7)
- God promised Abraham he would have many children
- Abraham and Sarah were very old and had no children
- It seemed impossible, but Abraham believed God
- Abraham waited many years for the promise
- Finally, when Abraham was 100 years old, Isaac was born
- Abraham’s faith was counted as righteousness
- Offering Isaac as a Sacrifice (Genesis 22:1-19)
- God told Abraham to sacrifice his son Isaac
- Isaac was the son God had promised
- Abraham was confused but still obeyed
- Abraham took Isaac to Mount Moriah
- Just as Abraham was about to sacrifice Isaac, God stopped him
- God provided a ram to sacrifice instead
- This showed Abraham’s complete obedience and trust
Things God Promised to Abraham:
- A Great Nation (Genesis 12:2)
- “I will make you into a great nation”
- Abraham would have many descendants
- His family would become the nation of Israel
- Personal Blessings (Genesis 12:2)
- “I will bless you”
- “I will make your name great”
- Abraham would be famous and respected
- To Be a Blessing (Genesis 12:2)
- “You will be a blessing”
- Abraham would help others
- Through Abraham, God would bless the world
- Land to Live In (Genesis 12:1, 13:14-17)
- God would give Abraham a special land
- This land would belong to his descendants forever
- This became the Promised Land (Israel)
- Descendants Like Stars (Genesis 15:5, 22:17)
- Abraham’s descendants would be as many as the stars
- Too many to count
- They would be as numerous as sand on the seashore
- All Nations Blessed Through Him (Genesis 12:3, 22:18)
- Through Abraham’s family, all nations would be blessed
- This pointed to Jesus, who came from Abraham’s family
- Jesus would save people from all nations
Rewards of Obedience:
Abraham’s Rewards:
- God kept all His promises to Abraham
- Abraham became the father of many nations
- Abraham was called “God’s friend”
- Abraham is remembered as a great man of faith
- Jesus came through Abraham’s family line
General Rewards of Obedience:
- God’s Blessings – God blesses those who obey Him
- Peace and Joy – Obedient people have peace in their hearts
- God’s Protection – God takes care of those who follow Him
- Good Relationships – Obedience helps us get along with others
- God’s Favor – God is pleased with obedient people
- Success in Life – God helps obedient people succeed
- Eternal Rewards – God will reward obedience in heaven
Lessons for Us:
- We should obey God even when we don’t understand
- Faith means trusting God’s promises
- God always keeps His word
- Obedience brings blessings
- God has a plan for our lives too
