Learning Objectives: By the end of this lesson, pupils should be able to:

  • explain fourth and fifth generations of computers

Lesson Content:

Fourth and Fifth Generation Computers:

Fourth Generation Computers (1970s-1990s):

Technology Used:

  • Microprocessors: Entire computer processor on single chip
  • Much smaller and more powerful than previous generations
  • Personal computers: Computers for individual use

Characteristics:

  • Size: Small enough for desks and homes
  • Cost: Affordable for individuals and families
  • Speed: Much faster than previous generations
  • User-friendly: Easier for regular people to use
  • Reliability: Rarely broke down

Examples:

  • Apple II: Popular home computer
  • IBM PC: Standard business computer
  • Commodore 64: Gaming and home computer
  • Early laptops: Portable computers

What Made Them Special:

  • GUI (Graphical User Interface): Pictures and icons instead of just text
  • Mouse: Point and click instead of typing commands
  • Software: Many programs available for different tasks
  • Games: Computer games became popular

Fifth Generation Computers (1990s-Present):

Technology Used:

  • Advanced microprocessors: Even faster and smaller chips
  • Artificial Intelligence: Computers that can “think” and learn
  • Internet connectivity: Computers connected to worldwide network

Characteristics:

  • Very fast processing: Handle complex tasks quickly
  • Multimedia: Can handle pictures, videos, and sounds
  • Networking: Connect with other computers worldwide
  • Mobile: Laptops, tablets, smartphones
  • Smart features: Voice recognition, touch screens

Examples:

  • Modern desktop computers: What we use in school
  • Laptops: Portable computers
  • Tablets: Touch-screen computers
  • Smartphones: Computers you can carry in pocket
  • Smart TVs: Televisions with computer features

Special Features of Fifth Generation:

  • Internet: Can access information from anywhere in world
  • Email: Send messages instantly to anyone
  • Video calls: See and talk to people far away
  • Touch screens: Control with finger touches
  • Voice commands: Tell computer what to do by speaking

Evolution Timeline:

  • 1st Generation: Room-sized, vacuum tubes
  • 2nd Generation: Transistors, smaller but still big
  • 3rd Generation: Integrated circuits, cabinet-sized
  • 4th Generation: Microprocessors, desktop-sized
  • 5th Generation: Advanced chips, portable sizes

Impact on Our Lives:

  • Education: Computers help us learn in school
  • Communication: Stay in touch with family and friends
  • Entertainment: Games, videos, music
  • Work: Adults use computers for their jobs
