Topic: Formatting in Microsoft Word

Making Your Text Look Nice

Changing Letter Styles:

  • Font – the style of letters (Arial, Times, Comic Sans)
  • Size – how big or small letters are (10, 12, 14, 16)
  • Color – red, blue, green, purple, black

Making Text Stand Out:

  • Bold – thick, dark letters (click B or press Ctrl+B)
  • Italic – slanted letters (click I or press Ctrl+I)
  • Underline – line under words (click U or press Ctrl+U)
  • Highlight – colored background behind text

Arranging Text on Page:

  • Left – text starts from left side
  • Center – text goes in the middle
  • Right – text starts from right side

Making Lists:

  • Bullets – dots before each item • Like this • And this
  • Numbers – counting order
    1. First item
    2. Second item
    3. Third item

Line Spacing:

  • Single – normal space between lines
  • Double – extra space between lines
  • Makes text easier to read

How to Format Text

  1. Select the text you want to change
  2. Choose the formatting option
  3. Click the button or use keyboard shortcuts
  4. See the changes happen immediately

Exercise 2:

  1. Which button makes text thick and dark? _______

CLASS ACTIVITIES

Animal Characteristic Hunt

Exercise 3: Look at these animals and write one characteristic for each:

  • Dog: How does it move? _______
  • Fish: How does it breathe? _______
  • Bird: What does it eat? _______
  • Cat: How does it have babies? _______

Living Thing Test

Exercise 4: Circle YES or NO for each:

  • Can a stone move by itself? YES / NO
  • Do plants grow? YES / NO
  • Do cars need food? YES / NO
  • Do animals breathe? YES / NO

Formatting Fun

If computers available:

 Exercise 5: Type your name and try these: 

□ Make it bold 

□ Change color to red 

□ Make it bigger (size 18) 

□ Put it in the center

Exercise 6: Type this list about animals and format it: Animals can:

  • Move
  • Grow
  • Eat
  • Breathe

Make it: 

□ Use bullets 

â–¡ Make “Animals can:” bold 

â–¡ Center the title

 

HOMEWORK

  1. Watch one animal for 10 minutes and write down 3 things it does that show it’s alive
  2. Practice making text bold, italic, and underlined in Microsoft Word
  3. Ask your parents to name 3 animals and how they move
