- Sleep Mode: What it does: Puts computer in low-power state, keeps session active When to use: Short breaks, when you’ll return soon How it works:
- Saves current state in memory
- Turns off screen and hard drives
- Uses minimal power
- Wakes up quickly when you move mouse or press key Benefits: Fast resume, saves energy, keeps work open
- Hibernate: What it does: Saves everything to hard drive, then shuts down When to use: Longer breaks, saves more energy than sleep How it works:
- Saves session to hard disk
- Completely powers down
- Uses no electricity
- Takes longer to wake up than sleep Benefits: No power use, can’t lose work, safe for laptops
- Restart: What it does: Shuts down and immediately starts up again When to use: After installing software, when computer is slow Steps:
- Save all work first
- Close programs
- Select “Restart” from shutdown menu
- Computer turns off then turns back on automatically
- Wait for system to start up completely
Distinguishing Between Shutdown Methods:
Shutdown vs Sleep:
- Shutdown: Complete power off, longer startup
- Sleep: Quick sleep/wake, uses some power
- Use shutdown: End of day, saving maximum energy
- Use sleep: Short breaks, quick return to work
Sleep vs Hibernate:
- Sleep: Faster wake-up, uses small amount of power
- Hibernate: No power use, slower wake-up
- Sleep good for: Desktop computers, short breaks
- Hibernate good for: Laptops, longer breaks, travel
Restart vs Shutdown:
- Restart: Automatic restart after shutdown
- Shutdown: Stay off until manually turned on
- Restart when: Installing updates, computer problems
- Shutdown when: Finished for the day
Step-by-Step Procedures:
For Windows Computers:
- Click Start button (bottom left corner)
- Click Power button icon
- Choose option: Shutdown, Sleep, Restart, or Hibernate
- Wait for completion
For Mac Computers:
- Click Apple menu (top left corner)
- Select option: Shut Down, Sleep, or Restart
- Confirm choice if asked
- Wait for completion
Emergency Shutdown: When to use: Computer frozen, not responding How: Hold power button for 5-10 seconds Warning: Only use when necessary, may lose unsaved work
Best Practices:
- Always save work before shutting down
- Close programs properly
- Don’t force shutdown unless emergency
- Use sleep for short breaks
- Use shutdown at end of day
- Restart monthly to keep system running smoothly
Troubleshooting: If computer won’t shut down:
- Wait longer – some computers take time
- Close stubborn programs manually
- Try restart instead
- Ask adult for help if still problems
