Topic: Steps of Booting

Learning Objectives:

By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:

  • Follow the correct steps for warm booting
  • Follow the correct steps for cold booting
  • Know when to use each type of booting

Introduction:

Remember when we learned about booting? Today we will practice the exact steps for both cold booting and warm booting.

Lesson Content:

COLD BOOTING STEPS:

When computer is completely turned off

Step 1: Check Power Connection

  • Make sure power cable is plugged into wall
  • Check that cable is connected to computer
  • Look for power indicator lights

Step 2: Press Power Button

  • Find the power button (usually has ⏻ symbol)
  • Press the button once firmly
  • Do not press multiple times

Step 3: Watch for Signs

  • Computer lights will turn on
  • You may hear fan sounds
  • Screen will start to glow

Step 4: Wait for Loading

  • Computer will show starting messages
  • Different colors and pictures appear
  • Be patient – this takes time

Step 5: Desktop Appears

  • Main screen with icons shows up
  • Mouse pointer appears
  • Computer is now ready to use

WARM BOOTING STEPS:

When computer is already on but needs restarting

Step 1: Save Your Work

  • Save any documents you are working on
  • Close all programs you were using
  • Make sure nothing important is lost

Step 2: Find Restart Option

  • Click on Start menu or main button
  • Look for “Restart” or “Reboot” option
  • Some computers have restart button

Step 3: Click Restart

  • Click on restart option
  • Computer will ask “Are you sure?”
  • Click “Yes” to confirm

Step 4: Wait for Shutdown

  • Computer will close all programs
  • Screen will go dark
  • Computer turns off briefly

Step 5: Automatic Restart

  • Computer turns back on by itself
  • Loading messages appear again
  • Desktop returns when ready

When to Use Each Type:

Use Cold Booting When:

  • Computer is completely off
  • Starting computer first time of day
  • Computer has been unplugged
  • Teacher says to turn on computer

Use Warm Booting When:

  • Computer is running slow
  • Programs are not working properly
  • Teacher asks you to restart
  • Installing new software

Class Activity:

Teacher demonstrates both types of booting. Children identify which steps belong to cold boot versus warm boot.
