Main Content

What are Vowels?

Vowels are special marks we put on Arabic letters to help us read them correctly. Just like in English, vowels help us pronounce words properly.

The Three Main Vowels:

  1. Fätihah (َ )
  • Shape: A small line above the letter (like this: َ)
  • Sound: Makes an “a” sound (like “cat”)
  • Example: بَ = “ba”
  1. Kasrah ( ِ)
  • Shape: A small line below the letter (like this: ِ)
  • Sound: Makes an “i” sound (like “bit”)
  • Example: بِ = “bi”
  1. Dummah ( ُ)
  • Shape: A small curved line above the letter (like this: ُ)
  • Sound: Makes a “u” sound (like “but”)
  • Example: بُ = “bu”

Activity Time

Activity 1: Vowel Recognition

Activity 2: Writing Practice

Let pupils practice writing simple letters with each vowel:

  • تَ (ta) – with Fätihah
  • تِ (ti) – with Kasrah
  • تُ (tu) – with Dummah

Activity 3: Sound Practice
