Learning Objectives

By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:

1. Produce the vowel sounds as in put, push, full, good
2. Match the sounds with words

Content

Short /u/ Sound (as in “put”)

How to make the sound:

• Round your lips slightly
• Keep tongue in middle of mouth
• Make a short “uh” sound

Words with Short /u/ Sound

Beginning: No common words start with this sound Middle: put, push, pull, full, bull, wool End: Rare in English

Common /u/ Words

• put – to place something somewhere
• push – to move something away from you
• pull – to move something toward you
• full – completely filled
• good – nice or well done
• book – something to read
• look – to see with your eyes
• took – past tense of take

Word Families

-ook family: book, look, took, cook, hook -ull family: full, pull, bull, dull -ush family: push, bush, rush

Exercise

1. Say words with /u/ sound
2. Sort words by their ending sounds
3. Use /u/ words in sentences
