- Identify the vowel sounds
- Pronounce the vowel sounds correctly
- Identify words containing the vowel sounds
- Produce new words with the vowel sounds
Content
The Five Vowels: A, E, I, O, U

Short A Sound /æ/ (as in “cat”)
- Words: cat, bat, hat, mat, bag, fan
Short E Sound /ε/ (as in “bed”)
- Words: bed, red, pen, hen, net, wet
Short I Sound /ɪ/ (as in “sit”)
- Words: sit, bit, hit, pin, win, big
Short O Sound /É’/ (as in “hot”)
- Words: hot, pot, dog, log, box, fox
Short U Sound /ÊŒ/ (as in “cup”)
- Words: cup, bus, run, sun, fun, cut
Long Vowel Sounds
Long A (says its name): cake, make, lake Long E (says its name): tree, see, bee Long I (says its name): bike, like, kite Long O (says its name): home, bone, rope Long U (says its name): tube, cube, huge
Exercise
- Sort words by their vowel sounds
- Say vowel sounds clearly
- Find new words with each vowel
