Contemporary African fashion is modern clothing that uses African fabrics and traditions in new styles, such as corporate suits, jumpsuits and evening gowns. It mixes African prints with Western fabrics, fits the body more closely than older loose styles, and can be worn to the office as well as to parties.

What is contemporary African fashion?

“Contemporary” means modern or happening now. In the past, our traditional clothes like Agbada or Iro and Buba were very loose and followed strict rules.

Today, African fashion is a “mix”. We take our beautiful local fabrics and use them to make modern styles like corporate suits, jumpsuits and evening gowns.

Key features of modern African fashion

1. Fusion: Mixing African prints (like Ankara or Adire) with Western fabrics (like denim, lace or silk).
2. Fitting: Modern styles are more “contoured” to the body than the old, loose styles.
3. Versatility: You can wear a modern African jacket to the office on Monday, not just to a party on Saturday.

How has Ankara changed in modern fashion?

Years ago, Ankara was seen as “wrapper” fabric for older women. Today, it is the most popular fabric in the world for young African designers.

Modern Ankara trends

• Ankara corporate wear: Blazers, pencil skirts and high-waisted trousers made for the office.
• The “Mix and Match”: Using two or three different Ankara patterns in one single dress.
• Ankara accessories: We now see Ankara sneakers, bags and even phone cases.

Why is Ankara so popular?

It is affordable, easy to wash, and the colours stay bright for a long time. It allows every African to wear their identity every day.

How are traditional silhouettes modernised?

One of the biggest trends in African fashion right now is taking an “old” shape and giving it a “new” twist.

1. The “Female” Agbada: Traditionally, only men wore Agbada. Now, women wear “Short Agbadas” with slim trousers (pencil pants) and high heels. It is a symbol of power and confidence.
2. The “Pre-Tied” Gele: Many modern women find it hard to tie the traditional Gele. Designers now create “Auto-Gele”, which is already sewn into a beautiful shape. You just put it on like a cap.
3. Corset tops with traditional wrappers: Mixing a structured, padded “Bustier” top with a traditional double wrapper. This is the “Aso-Ebi” trend currently seen at many Nigerian weddings.

What is sustainable and ethical fashion?

Modern African fashion is also about quality and care.

1. Supporting local weavers: Designers are going back to using Aso-Oke, Akwete and Adire because they are handmade and unique. This helps local artisans earn a living.
2. Upcycling: Using small scraps of fabric (leftovers) to create “Patchwork” designs. This reduces waste in the tailoring shop and creates a one-of-a-kind look.
3. Ready-to-Wear (RTW): In the past, you had to visit a tailor for every dress. Now, African designers make “Ready-to-Wear” collections in standard sizes (small, medium, large) so people can buy them instantly in shops.

How has African fashion become a global style?

African fashion is no longer “local”. It is a global trend.

Trends to watch

• African prints in Hollywood: Seeing our fabrics used in major movies like Black Panther.
• Digital fashion: Designers are now using social media (Instagram, TikTok) to sell their clothes to people in London, New York and Paris.
• The “Afrobeats” influence: Our musicians have become fashion icons. The way they style their jewellery, hats and oversized shirts has created a “Streetwear” trend for young people.
