Lesson Content:

Methods of Preserving Farm Produce:

  1. Sun Drying

  • Spreading produce under the sun to remove moisture
  • Examples: Drying tomatoes, peppers, okra
  • Advantages: Cheap, easy, no special equipment needed
  1. Smoking

  • Using smoke from burning wood to preserve food
  • Examples: Smoking fish, meat
  • Advantages: Adds flavor, kills germs
  1. Salting

  • Adding salt to food to preserve it
  • Examples: Salting fish, meat
  • Advantages: Salt kills bacteria, cheap method
  1. Frying

  • Cooking food in hot oil to preserve it
  • Examples: Fried plantain chips, fried fish
  • Advantages: Tastes good, lasts longer
  1. Refrigeration

  • Keeping food cold to preserve it
  • Examples: Storing fruits, vegetables in refrigerator
  • Advantages: Keeps food very fresh, maintains nutrients

Practical Activity: Students will practice sun drying tomato slices and observe the process.
