Topic: Preservation of Farm Produce

Learning Objectives: By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:

  • Explain the meaning of preservation
  • Justify the reason for preserving farm produce

Lesson Content:

What is Preservation? Preservation means keeping farm produce fresh and preventing it from spoiling or going bad for an extended period.

Why Do We Preserve Farm Produce?

  1. To prevent spoilage – Stops crops from rotting
  2. To store food for future use – Have food during dry season
  3. To reduce waste – Don’t throw away good food
  4. To make money – Sell preserved foods when fresh ones are scarce
  5. To maintain nutrients – Keep the good things in food
  6. To have food all year round – Eat fruits and vegetables even when not in season

Examples of Farm Produce That Need Preservation:

  • Fruits: oranges, mangoes, tomatoes

  • Vegetables: onions, peppers, leafy vegetables

  • Grains: rice, maize, beans

  • Tubers: yams, cassava, potatoes

  2. Give 4 reasons why we preserve farm produce
  3. List 6 farm produce that can be preserved
