Topic: Preservation of Fruits: Orange, Banana, Tomatoes, Pawpaw…

Learning Objectives: By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:

  • Identify vegetable fruits
  • Preserve different types of fruits
  • Produce different types of fruit juice

Lesson Content:

Examples of Fruits:

  • Orange
  • Banana
  • Tomatoes
  • Pawpaw (papaya)
  • Pineapple
  • Mango
  • Cucumber
  • Watermelon

Methods of Preserving Fruits:

  1. Refrigeration
  • Keep fruits cold to slow down spoiling
  • Best for short-term storage
  1. Drying
  • Remove water from fruits by sun drying
  • Examples: Dried tomatoes, dried banana chips
  1. Making Juice
  • Extract liquid from fruits
  • Can be stored longer than fresh fruits
  1. Canning
  • Preserve fruits in sealed containers
  • Requires special equipment
  1. Making Jam
  • Cook fruits with sugar to make jam
  • Sugar helps preserve the fruits

Steps to Make Fruit Juice:

  1. Select ripe, healthy fruits
  2. Wash fruits thoroughly
  3. Extract juice by squeezing or blending
  4. Strain to remove pulp if desired
  5. Add small amount of preservatives if needed
  6. Store in clean containers

Tips for Fruit Preservation:

  • Handle fruits gently to avoid bruising
  • Store different fruits separately
  • Use ripe but not overripe fruits
  • Keep storage area clean
