Topic: Structure: Adverbs

What are Adverbs?

Adverbs are words that describe verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs. They tell us HOW, WHEN, WHERE, or HOW MUCH something happens.

Types of Adverbs:

  1. Adverbs of Manner (HOW) Tell us how something is done:
  • quickly, slowly, carefully, loudly, quietly
  • She runs quickly.
  • He speaks softly.
  1. Adverbs of Time (WHEN) Tell us when something happens:
  • yesterday, today, tomorrow, now, soon, always, never
  • We went to school yesterday.
  • I always do my homework.
  1. Adverbs of Place (WHERE) Tell us where something happens:
  • here, there, everywhere, nowhere, upstairs, outside
  • Come here immediately.
  • The children are playing outside.
  1. Adverbs of Frequency (HOW OFTEN) Tell us how often something happens:
  • always, usually, often, sometimes, rarely, never
  • I usually eat breakfast at 7am.
  • She never comes late to school.

Forming Adverbs from Adjectives:

Most adverbs are formed by adding -ly to adjectives:

  • quick → quickly
  • careful → carefully
  • beautiful → beautifully
  • slow → slowly

Exercise E – Identify Adverb Types

Write M (Manner), T (Time), P (Place), or F (Frequency):

  1. The students worked diligently. ___
  2. My mother arrived yesterday. ___
  3. The cat is sleeping upstairs. ___
  4. I often visit my grandmother. ___
  5. Please speak clearly. ___
  6. We will meet tomorrow. ___

Exercise F – Form Adverbs

Change these adjectives to adverbs:

  1. loud → __________

  3. honest → __________
  4. brave → __________
  5. polite → __________
  6. easy → __________

Exercise G – Complete with Adverbs

Fill in the blanks with suitable adverbs:

  1. The teacher explained the lesson ________ (manner).
  2. I ________ brush my teeth before bed (frequency).
  3. My father will return ________ (time).
  4. The birds are singing ________ (place).
  5. She answered the question ________ (manner).

Exercise H – Adverb Position

Underline the adverbs and say what they describe:

  1. The boy quickly ran to catch the bus.
  2. My sister always helps with cooking.
  3. Yesterday, we visited the museum.
  4. The children played happily in the garden.
  5. I rarely eat sweets.
