What is Dialogue Writing?

Dialogue writing is creating conversations between characters. It should sound natural and move the story forward.

Rules for Writing Dialogue:

  1. Use quotation marks around spoken words
  2. Start a new line for each speaker
  3. Use dialogue tags (he said, she asked)
  4. Make it sound natural – like real speech
  5. Show character personality through speech

Sample Dialogue Format:

At the School Canteen

“What would you like to eat today?” asked the canteen woman.

“I’ll have rice and stew, please,” replied Tolu politely.

“Would you like some meat with that?” she inquired.

“Yes, please. How much will that cost?” Tolu wanted to know.

“That will be two hundred naira,” the woman answered.

“Here you are,” said Tolu, handing over the money. “Thank you very much.”

“You’re welcome, dear. Enjoy your meal,” the woman smiled.
