Topic: Writing: Recording Observations

What is Observation Recording?

Observation recording is writing down what you see, hear, or notice during a scientific study. Good observation records are accurate, detailed, and organized.

Elements of Good Observation Records:

  1. Date and Time
  • Always record when you made the observation
  • Include weather conditions if relevant
  1. Location
  • State exactly where the observation took place
  • Include specific details about the environment
  1. Objective Description
  • Write what you actually see, not what you think
  • Use specific measurements when possible
  • Avoid personal opinions
  1. Systematic Organization
  • Use headings and subheadings
  • Number your observations
  • Keep related information together
