What is maintenance?

Maintenance is any mental or mechanical activities that is carried out in order to sustain the good working condition of any objects, machine or human for that they will be in good working condition for a very long time.

Machine maintenance is also the process of keeping a machine in good working order by regularly inspecting, cleaning, and repairing it as needed. The goal of machine maintenance is to extend the life of the machine, improve its performance, and reduce the risk of breakdowns. There are two main types of machine maintenance: preventive maintenance and corrective maintenance.

What are the reasons for maintenance?

  • To keep the machine in good working condition for a very long period of time • To increase the working life span of the object or machine and save money on costs of replacement or repair • To avoid unnecessary wasteful spending on repairs that are not always efficient and effective as the new ones • To reduce, prevent or eliminate the possibility or the occurrence of accidents

Types of maintenance

  1. Predictive Maintenance: This type of maintenance is easily foretold and expected in order to keep the machine in optimal performance. Examples of such predictive maintenance is the regular change change of engine oil of a motor cycle or motor cycle or at least once in every fourteen days or proper tyre gauge of a motor vehicle. It is a type of maintenance strategy that uses data and analytics to predict when a machine is likely to experience a problem or fail. The goal of predictive maintenance is to identify potential issues before they occur, so that maintenance can be performed before the machine breaks down. This can help to reduce the risk of downtime and improve the overall reliability of the machine.
  2. Preventive Maintenance: Preventive maintenance is necessitated by the need to prevent the vehicle of machine from total collapses or breakdown. This is easily noticed when the vehicle starts making funny strange sounds. It is better that the vehicle is taken to the mechanic workshop to prevent breakdown of the machine. It also involves performing regular inspections and maintenance tasks on a machine to prevent problems from occurring. This can include tasks like lubricating parts, replacing worn components, and cleaning the machine. Preventive maintenance is typically scheduled on a regular basis, such as daily, weekly, or monthly.

Corrective Maintenance: This type of maintenance is always carried out when the deed had already been done. It is most understandable because the machine is already down and this may affect productive use of time. The machine is already down, we just want to salvage or save what is left. Prevention is better than cure. It involves fixing a problem that has already occurred. This can include tasks like repairing a broken part or replacing a faulty component. Corrective maintenance is typically performed on an as-needed basis, when a problem is detected.
