The Importance of Being Attentive
Why We Must Be Attentive
God’s Voice is Often Quiet
- God doesn’t always speak loudly
- He often speaks in a “still small voice” like with Elijah
- If we’re not paying attention, we might miss His voice
- We need to listen carefully with our hearts
God’s Message is Important
- Every word from God has meaning
- God doesn’t waste words when He speaks
- His messages can change our lives
- Missing God’s word can cost us His blessings
God Expects a Response
- When God speaks, He wants us to answer
- He expects us to act on what He says
- Ignoring God’s revelation shows disrespect
- Our response shows whether we truly love God
God May Not Repeat Himself
- Sometimes God gives us only one chance to hear
- We might miss an important opportunity
- God may choose someone else if we don’t listen
- It’s better to be ready than to be sorry
How to Be Attentive
Remove Distractions
- Turn off phones, TV, and music when praying
- Find a quiet place to meet with God
- Clear your mind of worries and problems
- Focus only on God during prayer time
Be Still and Wait
- Don’t rush when talking to God
- Give God time to speak to you
- Be patient and don’t hurry
- Sometimes God speaks after we stop talking
Listen with Your Heart
- God speaks to our spirits, not just our ears
- Pay attention to feelings and thoughts during prayer
- Notice when God brings Bible verses to your mind
- Be sensitive to God’s gentle leading
Being Vigilant Not to Miss God’s Revelation
What Does Vigilant Mean?
Vigilant = Being watchful, alert, and ready at all times
Why We Need to be Vigilant
God Can Speak Anytime
- God doesn’t work on our schedule
- He might speak when we least expect it
- We need to be ready 24 hours a day
- God spoke to Samuel at night while he was sleeping
The Devil Tries to Distract Us
- Satan doesn’t want us to hear from God
- He sends distractions to make us miss God’s voice
- He makes us too busy to listen to God
- We must fight against these distractions
We Easily Get Distracted
- Our minds wander to other things
- We get busy with school, play, and activities
- We forget to spend time with God
- We need to make hearing from God a priority
How to Stay Vigilant
Pray Regularly
- Set aside specific times each day to pray
- Talk to God morning, afternoon, and night
- Don’t skip your prayer time
- Make prayer a daily habit
Read the Bible Daily
- God often speaks through His written word
- Study the Bible to know God’s voice better
- Ask God to help you understand what you read
- Apply Bible verses to your daily life
Stay in Church
- God often speaks through pastors and teachers
- Don’t miss church services
- Pay attention during sermons
- Participate in Bible study classes
Keep Your Heart Clean
- Confess your sins to God quickly
- Don’t let sin block your ears from hearing God
- Ask God to forgive you when you do wrong
- Keep a pure heart before God
The Story of Samuel’s Call

Samuel’s Background
- Samuel’s mother Hannah couldn’t have children
- She prayed and cried to God for a son
- She promised to give her son to serve God
- God answered her prayer and gave her Samuel
Samuel in the Temple
- Hannah brought Samuel to live with Eli the priest
- Samuel helped Eli take care of the temple
- He was just a young boy, but he served God faithfully
- He grew up learning about God and His ways
The Night God Called
First Call:
- Samuel was sleeping in the temple near the Ark of God
- God called “Samuel! Samuel!”
- Samuel thought Eli was calling him
- He ran to Eli saying “Here I am, you called me”
- Eli said “I didn’t call you, go back and lie down”
Second Call:
- God called Samuel again
- Samuel ran to Eli again thinking he called
- Eli again said “I didn’t call you, my son, go back to sleep”
Third Call:
- God called Samuel the third time
- Samuel went to Eli again
- This time Eli realized that God was calling Samuel
- Eli told Samuel what to do when God called again
Fourth Call – The Right Response:
- Eli taught Samuel to say “Speak, Lord, your servant is listening”
- When God called the fourth time, Samuel gave the right answer
- God then spoke His message to Samuel
- Samuel listened carefully to everything God said
God’s Message
- God told Samuel that judgment was coming to Eli’s family
- Eli’s sons were wicked and didn’t honor God
- God was going to punish them for their sins
- This was a serious and sad message
Samuel’s Response
- Samuel was afraid to tell Eli the bad news
- But when Eli asked, Samuel told him everything
- Samuel didn’t hide any part of God’s message
- Even though he was young, he was faithful to deliver God’s word
The Results
- Samuel grew up to become a great prophet
- God was with him and made his words come true
- All Israel knew that Samuel was God’s prophet
- Samuel served God faithfully all his life
Lessons from Samuel’s Story
- God can speak to anyone, even children
- We need help from older Christians to understand God’s voice
- The right attitude is “Speak, Lord, your servant is listening”
- We must be ready to obey God even when it’s difficult
- Being faithful in small things leads to bigger responsibilities
