Conditions Necessary for the Forgiveness of Sins
To receive God’s forgiveness, we must meet these important conditions:
- Recognize and Admit Your Sin
- Know that you have done wrong
- Don’t make excuses for your sin
- Accept that you are a sinner who needs help
- Be honest about your mistakes
Example: The prodigal son said “Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you” (Luke 15:21)
- Feel Sorry for Your Sin (Repentance)
- Be truly sad that you have sinned
- Feel bad about hurting God and others
- Wish you had not done wrong
- Have a broken and sorry heart
What repentance means:
- It’s not just feeling sorry because you got caught
- It’s being sorry because you hurt God
- It means you truly regret what you did
- You feel sad about disappointing God
Example: King David cried and felt very sorry when he realized his sin (Psalm 51)
- Confess Your Sin
- Tell God about your sin
- Don’t hide or cover up what you did wrong
- Be specific about your sins
- Admit your guilt honestly to God
How to confess:
- Talk to God in prayer
- Say exactly what you did wrong
- Don’t blame others for your sin
- Ask God to forgive you
Bible promise: “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins” (1 John 1:9)
- Ask for Forgiveness
- Humbly request God to forgive you
- Don’t demand forgiveness – ask for it
- Come to God with a humble heart
- Believe that God wants to forgive you
Example: The tax collector prayed “God, be merciful to me, a sinner” (Luke 18:13)
- Believe in Jesus Christ
- Trust that Jesus died for your sins
- Believe that Jesus can save you
- Accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior
- Have faith that Jesus’ blood washes away sin
Why Jesus is necessary:
- Jesus paid the price for our sins
- His death on the cross made forgiveness possible
- No one comes to God except through Jesus
- Jesus is the only way to salvation
- Turn Away from Sin (Repent)
- Stop doing the wrong things
- Choose to live a new life
- Turn your back on sinful behavior
- Walk in the opposite direction from sin
What turning away means:
- If you were stealing, stop stealing
- If you were lying, start telling the truth
- If you were being mean, start being kind
- Make a decision to change your ways
- Forgive Others
- Forgive people who have hurt you
- Don’t hold grudges against others
- Be willing to give others second chances
- Treat others the way God treats you
Jesus taught: “Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us” (Matthew 6:12)
Important: If we don’t forgive others, God won’t forgive us (Matthew 6:15)
