BASIC SCIENCE: WATER

Uses of Water

Water is very important for life. We use water for many things:

• Drinking – our body needs water to stay healthy

• Cooking – to prepare food and make tea

• Bathing – to keep our body clean

• Washing – clothes, plates, and other things

• Cleaning – our house and surroundings

• Growing plants – plants need water to live

• Swimming – for exercise and fun

• Transportation – boats move on water

Sources of Water

We get water from different places:

Natural Sources:

• Rivers – flowing water

• Lakes – still water bodies

• Wells – deep holes in the ground

• Rain – water from the sky

Springs – water coming out of rocks

Man-made Sources:

• Taps – water pipes in houses

• Boreholes – machines dig deep for water

• Dams – walls built to store river water

Composition of Water

Water is made of two parts:

• Hydrogen (H) – 2 parts
• Oxygen (O) – 1 part
• Together they make H₂O
