What is Social Studies?

Social Studies is a subject that helps us learn about people, places, and how we live together in our community and country.

Simple Definition: Social Studies is the study of people and their environment.

Scope of Social Studies

Social Studies covers many areas of our life:

  1. Our Family – Learning about family members and their roles

2. Our Community – Understanding our neighborhood and the people in it

3. Our Country – Learning about Nigeria and its people

4. Culture – Our traditions, food, and way of life

5. Environment – The places where we live and play

6. History – Stories about what happened in the past

Areas of Focus in Social Studies

Social Studies focuses on:

  • How people live together
  • Different cultures and traditions
  • Our environment and how to care for it
  • Rules and laws that guide us
  • Different occupations people do
  • Festivals and celebrations

Why Do We Study Social Studies?

  • To understand our culture and traditions
  • To learn how to live peacefully with others
  • To know more about our country Nigeria
  • To learn how to take care of our environment
