Learning Objectives

By the end of this lesson, pupils should be able to:

  • Mention types of food eaten among the three major cultural groups in Nigeria
  • Mention similar food we eat together in our cultural groups
  • Mention the types of food eaten by other cultures

Foods from Different Cultural Groups

Hausa-Fulani Foods

  1. Tuwo – Made from rice or corn flour

Suya – Spicy grilled meat

Fura da Nono – Millet balls with milk

Masa – Rice cakes

Dambu nama – Dried shredded meat

Koko – Porridge made from millet

Yoruba Foods

  1. Amala – Made from yam flour

Pounded Yam – Yam pounded into smooth paste

Egusi Soup – Soup made from melon seeds

Jollof Rice – Rice cooked with tomatoes and spices

Ewedu – Jute leaves soup

Akara – Bean cakes

Moi-moi – Steamed bean pudding

Igbo Foods

  1. Bitter Leaf Soup – Soup made from bitter leaves

Oha Soup – Made with oha leaves

Ukwa – Breadfruit

Abacha – African salad

Nkwobi – Spicy cow foot

Okpa – Bambara nut pudding

Similar Foods We All Eat

Even though we come from different cultures, there are some foods that all Nigerians enjoy:

1. Rice Dishes

  • Jollof Rice – Popular in all cultures
  • Fried Rice – Enjoyed everywhere
  • White Rice – Eaten by all tribes

2. Yam Dishes

  • Boiled Yam – Common food for all
  • Yam Porridge – Enjoyed by everyone
  • Fried Yam – Popular snack

3. Beans Dishes

  • Beans and Rice – Eaten everywhere in Nigeria
  • Beans Porridge – Common in all cultures
  • Akara – Bean cakes loved by all

4. Plantain

  • Fried Plantain – Popular in all regions
  • Boiled Plantain – Common food
  • Plantain Porridge – Enjoyed by all

5. Soups with Different Names

  • Each culture has vegetable soups, but they call them different names
  • All cultures use palm oil in cooking
  • Everyone eats soup with starchy foods

Foods from Other Countries

Nigeria also enjoys foods from other countries:

1. Bread and Butter

  • Came from European countries
  • Now common breakfast in Nigeria
  • Eaten with tea or milk

2. Spaghetti

  • Originally from Italy
  • Now popular in Nigerian homes
  • Often cooked with Nigerian spices

3. Noodles

  • From Asian countries
  • Quick and easy meal for children
  • Popular as snacks

4. Pizza and Burgers

  • From America and Europe
  • Popular in cities
  • Eaten in restaurants

Why We Eat Different Foods

  • Different regions have different crops that grow well
  • Climate affects what food can be grown
  • Tradition passes recipes from parents to children
  • Some foods are easier to find in certain areas

The Beauty of Food Diversity

  • We can try foods from other cultures
  • It makes meal times interesting
  • We learn about other people through their food
  • Food brings people together during celebrations
