Topic: Phonics – Pronounce Consonant Sounds In Isolation

Learning Objectives

By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:

  1. Identify the consonant sounds
  2. Arrange the consonant sounds in sequence
  3. Pronounce the consonant sounds

Introduction

Consonant sounds are all the letters except the vowels (a, e, i, o, u). There are 21 consonant letters that make different sounds.

Content Development

The 21 Consonant Letters: B, C, D, F, G, H, J, K, L, M, N, P, Q, R, S, T, V, W, X, Y, Z

Consonant Sounds and Examples:

  1. /b/ – ball, book, baby, bed
  2. /c/ – cat, car, cake, cup
  3. /d/ – dog, door, duck, doll
  4. /f/ – fish, fan, foot, face
  5. /g/ – goat, gate, girl, game
  6. /h/ – hat, house, hand, hen
  7. /j/ – jump, jam, jet, jar
  8. /k/ – kite, key, king, kid
  9. /l/ – lion, lamp, leg, leaf
  10. /m/ – moon, man, mouse, map
  11. /n/ – net, nose, nail, nut
  12. /p/ – pen, pig, pot, pan
  13. /q/ – queen, quick, quiet, quiz
  14. /r/ – rat, run, red, ring
  15. /s/ – sun, sit, soap, see
  16. /t/ – top, table, tea, ten
  17. /v/ – van, voice, very, vest
  18. /w/ – water, win, wall, wet
  19. /x/ – box, six, fox, mix
  20. /y/ – yes, yellow, you, yet
  21. /z/ – zoo, zip, zero, zone

Sound Pronunciation Practice:

Lip Sounds (made with lips):

  • /b/ – press lips together: “buh”
  • /p/ – pop lips apart: “puh”
  • /m/ – hum with closed lips: “mmm”

Tongue Tip Sounds:

  • /t/ – tap tongue on roof: “tuh”
  • /d/ – tap tongue softly: “duh”
  • /n/ – tongue on roof, hum: “nnn”
  • /l/ – tongue tip up: “lll”

Back of Tongue Sounds:

  • /k/ – back of tongue up: “kuh”
  • /g/ – back of tongue, voice: “guh”

Teeth Sounds:

  • /f/ – bite lower lip: “fff”
  • /v/ – bite lower lip, voice: “vvv”
  • /s/ – teeth together, hiss: “sss”
  • /z/ – teeth together, buzz: “zzz”

Sequence Practice:

  1. Say letters in order: b-c-d-f-g-h-j-k-l-m-n-p-q-r-s-t-v-w-x-y-z
  2. Practice each sound 3 times
  3. Say a word with each sound
