Allah (SWT) has many beautiful names and attributes that help us understand who He is. In Islam, we believe that Allah has 99 names that describe His perfect qualities. In this lesson, we will learn about attributes 31-40. Understanding these attributes helps us know Allah better and strengthens our faith. We will explain each attribute in simple words and talk about what it means for our daily lives.
Attribute 31: Al-Hakam (The Judge)
Allah is Al-Hakam, which means “The Judge.” This name tells us that Allah is the final judge in all matters. He judges between people with perfect fairness. Unlike human judges who might make mistakes, Allah’s judgment is always right because He knows everything.
What this means for us:
– Allah will judge all our actions on the Day of Judgment
– We should try to be fair when we make decisions
– We should trust that Allah’s decisions are always best, even when we don’t understand them
The Quran says: “Is not Allah the most just of judges?” (Surah At-Tin, 95:8)
Attribute 32: Al-Adl (The Just)
Allah is Al-Adl, which means “The Just” or “The One Who is Fair.” Allah never does wrong to anyone. He gives everyone exactly what they deserve. He does not favor some people over others because of their wealth, color, or status.
What this means for us:
– We can trust that Allah will never be unfair to us
– We should try to be fair and just in our dealings with others
– On the Day of Judgment, everyone will receive exactly what they deserve
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “Allah is just and loves justice.”
Attribute 33: Al-Latif (The Subtle, The Kind)
Allah is Al-Latif, which means “The Subtle” or “The Kind.” This name has two main meanings. First, Allah is so subtle that He knows the smallest details of everything. Second, Allah is kind and gentle in how He treats His creation.
What this means for us:
– Allah knows even our smallest needs and problems
– Allah helps us in ways we might not even notice
– We should try to be kind and gentle with others
The Quran says: “Allah is Subtle with His servants; He gives provision to whom He wills.” (Surah Ash-Shura, 42:19)
Attribute 34: Al-Khabir (The All-Aware)
Allah is Al-Khabir, which means “The All-Aware.” Allah has complete knowledge of everything, inside and out. Nothing is hidden from Him. He knows what is in our hearts, what we think, and what we do in secret.
What this means for us:
– We cannot hide anything from Allah
– Allah understands our feelings and thoughts completely
– We should be honest in all our actions, even when no one is watching
The Quran says: “Indeed, Allah is All-Aware of what you do.” (Surah Al-Hujurat, 49:13)
Attribute 35: Al-Halim (The Forbearing)
Allah is Al-Halim, which means “The Forbearing” or “The Patient One.” Even when people disobey Him, Allah does not rush to punish them. He gives them time to realize their mistakes and ask for forgiveness.
What this means for us:
– Allah gives us many chances to turn back to Him
– We should try to be patient with others’ mistakes
– We should never despair of Allah’s mercy, no matter what we have done
The Quran says: “Allah is the Most Forbearing, Oft-Forgiving.” (Surah Al-Isra, 17:44)
Attribute 36: Al-Azim (The Magnificent)
Allah is Al-Azim, which means “The Magnificent” or “The Great One.” This name tells us about the greatness of Allah. He is greater than anything we can imagine. His greatness is beyond our understanding.
What this means for us:
– We should feel awe and wonder when we think about Allah
– Nothing is too big for Allah to handle
– We should praise Allah’s greatness in our prayers
In our prayers, we say “Subhana Rabbi Al-Azim” (Glory be to my Lord, the Magnificent) when we bow.
Attribute 37: Al-Ghafur (The All-Forgiving)
Allah is Al-Ghafur, which means “The All-Forgiving.” Allah forgives sins again and again. His forgiveness is vast and complete. No matter how many times we make mistakes, Allah is ready to forgive us if we are truly sorry.
What this means for us:
– We should never lose hope in Allah’s forgiveness
– We should ask Allah for forgiveness often
– We should also forgive others when they make mistakes
The Quran says: “Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.” (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:173)
Attribute 38: Ash-Shakur (The Appreciative)
Allah is Ash-Shakur, which means “The Appreciative” or “The Thankful.” This might seem strange – why would Allah thank us? This name means that Allah recognizes and rewards even the smallest good deed. He multiplies the reward for our good actions.
What this means for us:
– Even small good deeds are noticed and rewarded by Allah
– We should thank Allah for all His blessings
– We should also appreciate and thank others for what they do for us
The Quran says: “If you are grateful, I will surely increase you.” (Surah Ibrahim, 14:7)
Attribute 39: Al-Aliyy (The Most High)
Allah is Al-Aliyy, which means “The Most High.” Allah is above all His creation. This doesn’t just mean physically high, but also high in status and rank. Nothing and no one is higher than Allah.
What this means for us:
– We should direct our worship only to Allah
– Allah is above all worldly powers
– We should seek Allah’s pleasure above everything else
The Quran says: “He is the Most High, the Most Great.” (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:255)
Attribute 40: Al-Kabir (The Greatest)
Allah is Al-Kabir, which means “The Greatest.” Allah is greater than everything. His greatness has no limits. Everything else is small compared to Allah’s greatness.
What this means for us:
– Our problems are small compared to Allah’s greatness
– We should say “Allahu Akbar” (Allah is the Greatest) to remember this
– We should not let our pride make us forget Allah’s greatness
The Quran says: “He is the Most High, the Most Great.” (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:255)
How These Attributes Connect to Our Lives
Understanding these attributes of Allah helps us in many ways:
- It strengthens our faith: When we know who Allah is, our belief becomes stronger.
- It improves our worship: When we understand Allah’s greatness and mercy, we worship Him better.

- It teaches us good qualities: We should try to show some of these qualities in our own lives, like being just, forgiving, and appreciative.
Activities to Understand These Attributes
- Daily practice: Choose one attribute each day and try to remember it throughout the day.
- Dua (prayer): Make dua using these names of Allah. For example: “Ya Ghafur (O Forgiving One), forgive my sins.”
- Self-reflection: Think about how you can show some of these qualities in your own life. How can you be more just or more forgiving?
- Discussion: Talk with family or friends about which of these attributes means the most to you and why.
- Thank Allah: Make a list of things to thank Allah for, remembering that He is Ash-Shakur (The Appreciative).
Conclusion
The attributes of Allah (SWT) help us understand His perfect nature. These ten attributes (31-40) show us that Allah is just, forgiving, aware of everything, great beyond measure, and appreciative of our good deeds. By learning these names and thinking about what they mean, we come closer to Allah and improve ourselves.
We should remember that no one is like Allah. While we can try to be just, forgiving, and kind like Allah, His attributes are perfect and complete, while ours are limited and imperfect.
May Allah help us to understand His beautiful names and attributes, and to live our lives in a way that pleases Him.
