What is Tayammum?

Tayammum means “dry ablution” or “dry cleaning” for prayer.

It is a special way to get clean for prayer when we cannot use water.

Allah gave us this easy method because He loves us and wants to make things simple.

When Can We Do Tayammum?

1. No Water Available

• When traveling in the desert
• When there’s no clean water nearby
• When the water is finished

2. Cannot Use Water

• When you are very sick
• When using water will make you more sick
• When water is too cold and might harm you

3. Very Little Water

• When you have only drinking water left
• When you need water for cooking food
• When someone else needs the water more

4. No Time to Get Water

• When prayer time is ending
• When getting water will make you miss prayer
• In emergency situations

What Can We Use for Tayammum?

Clean Earth Materials:

• Sand (best choice)
• Soil or dirt
• Stones or rocks
• Clay
• Clean wall made of mud or stone

Cannot Use:

• Dirty materials
• Wet mud
• Grass or leaves
• Metal or plastic

How to Perform Tayammum

Step 1: Intention (Niyyah)

• Say in your heart: “I intend to do Tayammum for prayer”
• Face Qiblah if possible

Step 2: Say Bismillah

• Say “Bismillāh” (In the name of Allah)

Step 3: Strike Clean Earth

• Put both hands on clean sand or stone
• Strike (tap) gently with palms

Step 4: Wipe Face

• Wipe your whole face with both hands
• From forehead to chin
• From ear to ear

Step 5: Strike Again

• Put hands on earth again
• Strike gently one more time

Step 6: Wipe Hands

• Wipe right hand with left hand
• Wipe left hand with right hand
• From fingertips to wrists

Step 7: Say Dua

• Say the same dua as after Wudu

Important Rules

Remember:

• Tayammum is only when you cannot use water
• If water becomes available, use water for next prayer
• Tayammum is as good as Wudu for that prayer
• You can pray, touch Qur’ān, and do all worship with Tayammum
