Topic: Introduction of Wäw and Yäw as Consonant
What We Will Learn Today
- How to recognize Wäw (و) and Yäw (ي) as consonants
- When these letters make consonant sounds
- How to pronounce them correctly
- Practice reading words with consonant Wäw and Yäw
Understanding Wäw and Yäw
Important to Remember: Wäw (و) and Yäw (ي) can work in two ways:
- As vowels (long sounds)
- As consonants (regular letter sounds)
Wäw (و) as a Consonant
When Wäw is a Consonant:
- It makes the sound “w” (like in “water”)
- It usually has a harakat (vowel mark) on it
- Examples: وَ , وِ , وُ
How to Recognize Consonant Wäw:
- Look for Fathah (وَ) = “wa”
- Look for Kasrah (وِ) = “wi”
- Look for Dhammah (وُ) = “wu”
Examples in Words:
- وَلَدٌ (walad) = boy
- وِلاَدَةٌ (wilādah) = birth
- وُضُوءٌ (wuḍū’) = ablution
Yäw (ي) as a Consonant
When Yäw is a Consonant:
- It makes the sound “y” (like in “yes”)
- It usually has a harakat (vowel mark) on it
- Examples: يَ , يِ , يُ
How to Recognize Consonant Yäw:
- Look for Fathah (يَ) = “ya”
- Look for Kasrah (يِ) = “yi”
- Look for Dhammah (يُ) = “yu”
Examples in Words:
- يَدٌ (yad) = hand
- يُوسُفُ (Yūsuf) = Joseph
- يَوْمٌ (yaum) = day
Quick Rules to Remember
Consonant Signs:
- If Wäw or Yäw has any harakat (َ ِ ُ) on it = consonant
- If there’s no harakat and it comes after another vowel = usually vowel
Practice Sounds:
- و with Fathah (وَ) = “wa”
- و with Kasrah (وِ) = “wi”
- و with Dhammah (وُ) = “wu”
- ي with Fathah (يَ) = “ya”
- ي with Kasrah (يِ) = “yi”
- ي with Dhammah (يُ) = “yu”
