Learning Objectives

Introduction

Today we will learn about two very important parables that teach us how to be ready for God’s Kingdom.

Lesson Content

The Parable of the Sower (Matthew 13:3-23)

The Story:

• A farmer went out to plant seeds
• Some seeds fell on the hard path – birds ate them
• Some seeds fell on rocky ground – they grew quickly but died when the sun came out
• Some seeds fell among thorns – the thorns choked them
• Some seeds fell on good soil – they grew and produced much fruit

What the Parable Means:

• The Seed = God’s Word (the Bible)
• The Sower = Jesus or anyone who tells people about God
• Different Soils = Different types of people’s hearts

The Four Types of Hearts:

1. Hard Path Heart – Doesn’t understand God’s word at all
2. Rocky Heart – Gets excited about God but gives up when things get hard
3. Thorny Heart – Believes in God but loves money and things more
4. Good Soil Heart – Listens to God, obeys Him, and helps others know God

The Parable of the Ten Virgins (Matthew 25:1-13)

The Story:

• Ten young ladies were waiting for a wedding
• They all had lamps but only five brought extra oil
• The bridegroom was late coming
• When he finally came at midnight, five lamps had oil and were ready
• Five lamps had no oil and went out
• The five with oil went to the wedding
• The five without oil were left out

What the Parable Means:

• The Bridegroom = Jesus
• The Wedding = Heaven/God’s Kingdom
• The Oil = Being ready and having faith
• The Wise Virgins = People who stay ready for Jesus
• The Foolish Virgins = People who are not prepared

Lessons from These Parables:

From the Sower:

1. We should have good hearts that listen to God
2. We shouldn’t let hard times make us stop believing
3. We shouldn’t love money more than God
4. We should help God’s word grow in our lives

From the Ten Virgins:

1. We should always be ready for Jesus to come
2. We can’t borrow faith from others – we need our own
3. We shouldn’t wait until the last minute to get ready
4. Being prepared is very important

Things We Should Do to Prepare for God’s Kingdom:

1. Pray Every Day – Talk to God regularly
2. Read the Bible – Learn God’s word
3. Obey God – Do what God says is right
4. Be Kind to Others – Show God’s love
5. Say Sorry for Wrong Things – Ask God to forgive our sins
6. Tell Others About Jesus – Share the good news
7. Go to Church – Worship with other believers
8. Help People in Need – Care for others
9. Be Patient – Wait for God’s timing
10. Keep Faith Strong – Don’t give up believing
