LESSON CONTENT

Ways of Showing Respect

There are many different ways to show respect to people.

One important way is through salutation or greeting.

Salutation means the way we greet or say hello to people.

Ways of Showing Respect Through Greeting:

1. BOWING

• Bending your head or body forward slightly
• Shows respect to elders and important people
• Common way to greet teachers and parents
• Shows humility and good manners

2. KNEELING

• Going down on your knees to greet
• Shows deep respect to elders
• Common in many Nigerian cultures
• Used when greeting grandparents or kings

3. PROSTRATING

• Lying flat on the ground to greet
• Shows very deep respect
• Common in some cultures like Yoruba
• Used for very important people or elders

4. OTHER WAYS OF GREETING

• Handshake – shaking hands with people
• Saying good morning/afternoon – using polite words
• Curtseying – bending knees slightly (for girls)
• Standing up when elders enter the room

When to Use These Greetings:

• Morning greetings to parents
• Welcoming visitors to our home
• Greeting teachers at school
• Showing respect to community leaders
• Cultural ceremonies and events

Remember:

Different cultures have different ways of greeting, but all show respect and love!
