- Describe the effects of disorderliness on society.
What is orderliness?
Orderliness is the habit of acting in a neat, lawful and systematic way.
- Doing things the right way: acting in an acceptable manner that agrees with the rules and regulations of society.
- Peaceful conduct: handling life and dealings with others in a peaceful, orderly manner.
- Proper arrangement: placing things in a neat and systematic way.
- Obedience to law: laws and orders are obeyed and authorities are respected.
- Everyday practice: everyone in society should practise it daily. Without it, life can become chaotic.
What does orderliness involve?
Orderliness involves awareness, good use of time, a sense of place and working well with others.
- Awareness: taking time to notice what is going on in our environment and our lives, then handling it in an orderly way.
- Related qualities: orderliness goes with cleanliness and diligence. The desire for order is a good quality.
- Good time use: waking up in the morning, arriving at school early and doing what is necessary at the right time.
- A sense of place: knowing where things belong and how they relate to each other, then keeping them organised.
- A place for everything: when everything is in its place, we think and work more effectively.
- Teamwork: we work together more easily, for example by sharing tools and workspace with others.
What are examples of orderliness?
There are five examples of orderliness in this lesson: decorum, obeying traffic rules, queuing, listening skills and driving skills.
1. Decorum
- Meaning: the correct behaviour required in polite society.
- Idea: the right behaviour expected in a particular situation.
- Example: perfect silence by students when the principal is speaking.
2. Obeying traffic rules and regulations
- Road users: every road user obeys traffic rules and regulations.
- Understanding: road users need a proper understanding of the rules.
3. Queuing culture
- Meaning: lining up in turn where many people want the same service.
- Purpose: it helps things go well in an orderly manner.
- Places: petrol stations, ATM points, banking halls and BRT stands.
4. Listening skills
- Benefit: good listening helps us avoid misunderstanding, embarrassment and mistakes.
- Attention: we should be attentive to all information.
- Link to orderliness: paying attention while others speak is orderly behaviour.
5. Driving skills
- Training first: go through the normal driving school process set by the authorities before trying to drive.
- On the road: observe the traffic light and traffic regulations.
Where is orderliness shown?
Orderliness is shown at home, in school, on the road and in public places.
| Place | Orderly behaviour |
|---|---|
| Home | Waking up early and keeping things in their proper places. |
| School | Arriving early, listening attentively and keeping silent when the principal speaks. |
| Road | Obeying traffic lights and traffic regulations. |
| Public places | Queuing at petrol stations, ATM points, banking halls and BRT stands. |
What are the merits of orderliness?
The merits of orderliness are the benefits it brings to individuals, society and the nation.
- Friendliness: it promotes friendliness among people and societies.
- Clear thinking: it makes thinking and other things easy and possible.

What is disorderliness?
Disorderliness is behaviour that ignores rules, proper arrangement and taking turns.
- Example in school: making noise while a teacher or the principal is speaking.
- Example on the road: ignoring traffic lights or driving without proper training.
- Example in public: pushing ahead of others instead of joining the queue.
What are the causes of disorderliness?
Disorderliness comes mainly from poor habits, ignorance of rules and weak discipline.
- Lack of discipline: some people do not train themselves to follow rules.
- Ignorance of rules: some people do not know or understand the rules.
- Impatience: some people do not want to wait for their turn.
- Weak enforcement: rules are not applied to those who break them.
- Bad examples: people copy the wrong behaviour of others around them.
What are the effects of disorderliness?
Disorderliness makes life chaotic and slows down the progress of society.
| Situation | With orderliness | Without orderliness |
|---|---|---|
| Banking hall | People are served in turn. | People push and struggle for service. |
| Road | Traffic flows smoothly. | Traffic is jammed and accidents may happen. |
| Classroom | Students listen and learn. | Noise causes mistakes and misunderstanding. |
| Society | There is peace and progress. | Life becomes chaotic. |
How can orderliness be promoted?
Orderliness is promoted by teaching it, practising it and applying the rules fairly.
- Home training: parents teach children to keep things tidy and wake up on time.
- School rules: teachers and prefects insist on punctuality, silence and neatness.
- Good example: leaders and elders obey the rules themselves.
- Law enforcement: the authorities apply traffic and public rules fairly.
- Public education: people are taught the rules and the reasons for them.
