PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES By the end of the lesson, most of the pupils should have attained the following objectives –

  1. count in ten thousands, hundred thousands one million.
  2. write and read up to ten thousands, hundred thousands one million.
  3. find the value and place value of whole numbers.
  4. solve problems involving quantitative reasoning.
  5. identify numbers in place value.

ENTRY BEHAVIOR The pupils can read and write whole numbers up to 999 999.

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of abacus and charts of whole numbers, etc.

METHOD OF TEACHING Choose a suitable and appropriate methods for the lessons.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON

LESSON 1 – INTRODUCTORY ACTIVITIES

ACTIVITY 1 All numbers are made of digits from 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9.

A digit makes a number. When two or more digits are put together, a larger is for form.

For example, 1 and 0 make 10. 1 and 2 make 12. 1, 5 and 0 make 150, etc.

Leads pupils to read in this order –

LESSON 3 – VALUES AND PLACE VALUES

ACTIVITY 1

Guide the pupils to study in a number and their place value in 2 654 607.

That is,

2 352 654 697

Starting from the right most digit.

7 – The value of 7 is 7 and the place value is unit.

90 – The value of 9 is 90 and the place value is tens.

600 – The value of 6 is 600 and the place value is hundreds.

4 000 – The value of 4 is 4 000 and the place value is thousands.

50 000 – The value of 5 is 50 000 and the place value is ten thousands.

300 000 – The value of 3 is 300 000 and the place value is hundred thousands.

2 000 000 – The value of 2 is 2 000 000 and the place value is millions.

  2. Guides pupils to revise the previous work in counting up to counting in thousands.
  3. Guides pupils to count up to millions.
