Topic: Basic Movements in Dance

What is Dance Movement?

Dance movement is how we move our body parts to music in a special way.

8 Basic Dance Movements

  1. Walking

Moving forward step by step with rhythm

  • Keep in time with the music
  1. Marching

Lifting knees high while stepping

  • Like soldiers marching
  1. Jumping

Both feet leave the ground at the same time

  • Land softly on both feet
  1. Hopping

Jump on one foot only

  • Keep the other foot up
  1. Swaying

Moving body gently from side to side

  • Like a tree in the wind
  1. Clapping

Hitting palms together to the beat

  • Keep in time with music
  1. Turning/Spinning

Moving around in a circle

  • Turn slowly or quickly
  1. Bending

Moving body parts up and down

  • Bend knees, arms, or waist

Body Parts Used in Dance

  • Head: Nod up and down
  • Arms: Wave, swing, stretch
  • Legs: Kick, step, jump
  • Hips: Move side to side
  • Shoulders: Roll, lift, drop
