Topic: Definitions of Drama and Theatre

What is Drama?

Drama is:

  • Acting out a story with different characters
  • Pretending to be someone else to tell a story
  • A story performed by people instead of just told
  • Acting where people play different roles

Simple Definition: Drama = Acting out stories

Key Parts of Drama:

  • Story – what happens in the drama
  • Characters – the people in the story (real or imaginary)
  • Actors – people who pretend to be the characters
  • Dialogue – what the characters say to each other
  • Action – what the characters do

Examples of Drama:

  • School plays during assembly or cultural day
  • Bible stories acted out in church
  • Traditional stories performed during festivals
  • TV shows and movies with actors
  • Puppet shows with dolls acting

What is Theatre?

Theatre is:

  • The place where drama is performed
  • The building or space where people watch plays
  • The art of performing drama for an audience
  • Everything about presenting drama to people

Simple Definition: Theatre = The place and art of performing drama

Parts of a Theatre:

  • Stage – where actors perform
  • Audience – people who watch the performance
  • Seats – where audience sits to watch
  • Backstage – area behind the stage
  • Curtains – cloth that hides or shows the stage

Types of Theatre Spaces:

  • School hall or classroom
  • Church or mosque hall
  • Community center
  • Traditional village square
  • Special theatre buildings
  • Outdoor spaces under trees

 

Differences Between Drama and Theatre

Drama:

  • The story and acting itself
  • What the actors do
  • The performance or play
  • Can happen anywhere
  • The art of acting

Theatre:

  • The place where drama happens
  • Where people watch drama
  • The building or space
  • Includes the stage and audience area
  • The whole experience of watching

Simple Way to Remember:

Elements of Drama

  1. Characters
  • People in the story
  • Can be good or bad, funny or serious
  • Examples: king, princess, farmer, teacher, student

  • What happens in the drama
  • Beginning, middle, and end
  • Problem and how it’s solved
  1. Setting
  • When and where the story happens
  • Examples: school, home, forest, long ago, today
  1. Dialogue
  • Words the characters say
  • Conversations between characters
  • How characters talk to each other

  • What the characters do
  • Movement and activities
  • How characters behave

 

Types of Drama

  1. Comedy
  • Funny dramas that make us laugh
  • Happy endings
  • Examples: funny school stories, silly characters
  1. Tragedy
  • Sad dramas that make us cry
  • Serious problems and sad endings
  • Examples: stories about loss or hardship
  1. Educational Drama
  • Teaches us something important
  • Shows good and bad behavior
  • Examples: stories about honesty, kindness, hard work
  1. Traditional Drama
  • Stories from our culture and history
  • Folktales and legends acted out
  • Examples: Tortoise stories, stories of brave warriors

 

People in Drama and Theatre

Actors/Performers

  • People who act out the characters
  • Pretend to be someone else
  • Say the dialogue and do the actions

Director

  • Person who guides the actors
  • Decides how the story should be performed
  • Helps everyone work together

Audience

  • People who watch the drama
  • Sit in the theatre and enjoy the performance
  • Clap and show appreciation

Playwright

  • Person who writes the drama story
  • Creates the characters and dialogue
  • Plans what will happen
