What is Sound?

Sound is:

  • What reaches our ears and makes us hear things
  • All the things we listen to around us

Examples of Sound:

  • Birds singing in trees
  • Cars moving on the road
  • Water flowing in rivers
  • Wind blowing through leaves
  • Dogs barking and cats meowing

How Sound is Made:

  • Things vibrate (shake back and forth)
  • Air carries the vibrations to our ears
  • Our ears pick up the vibrations
  • Our brain understands what we hear

  • Tempo – how fast or slow the music goes

Examples of Music:

How Music is Made:

  • Using musical equipment and technology

What is Noise?

Noise is:

  • Sounds that we don’t want to hear
  • Harsh sounds that can hurt our ears

Examples of Noise:

Differences Between Music, Sound, and Noise

Sound (General Category)

  • Everything we can hear
  • Includes both music and noise
  • Can be pleasant or unpleasant
  • All around us all the time

Music (Pleasant Sound)

  • Organized and beautiful
  • Has melody and rhythm
  • Makes us feel good
  • We choose to listen to it
  • Art form created by people

Noise (Unpleasant Sound)

  • Disturbing and unwanted
  • No melody or rhythm
  • Makes us feel bad or annoyed
  • We try to avoid it
  • Often accidental or necessary but unpleasant

Examples in Daily Life

Sounds Around Us:

  • Morning – roosters crowing, birds singing
  • School – children talking, teachers speaking
  • Home – family members talking, cooking sounds
  • Outside – cars, motorcycles, people walking

Music We Enjoy:

  • Popular songs on radio and TV
  • Religious hymns and worship songs
  • Children’s songs and nursery rhymes

Noise We Avoid:

  • Very loud generators and machines
  • Honking car horns in traffic
  • Shouting and arguing
  • Banging and crashing sounds

How to Tell the Difference

Ask Yourself:

  1. Does it sound pleasant or unpleasant?
  2. Do I want to listen to it?
  3. Does it have a nice rhythm or melody?
  4. Does it make me feel good or bad?
  5. Is it organized or just random sounds?

Simple Rules:

  • If it’s pleasant and organized → Music
  • If it’s unpleasant and disturbing → Noise
  • If it’s just something you hear → Sound

Importance of Understanding These Differences

Why It Matters:

  • Helps us appreciate good music
  • Protects our ears from harmful noise
  • Makes us better listeners
  • Helps us create beautiful sounds
  • Teaches us to respect others’ need for quiet

What We Can Do:

  • Listen to beautiful music
  • Create our own music and songs

  • Protect our ears from loud sounds
  • Appreciate the sounds of nature
